🦋GRAVES DISEASE AWARENESS🦋

What is Graves’ disease.

Graves’ disease is an autoimmune disorder that leads to an overactive thyroid gland (hyperthyroidism). An autoimmune disorder is a condition that occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks healthy tissue 🥺

Why is it called Graves’ disease.

The name GRAVES DISEASE is quite unsettling 😅however It was originally known as ‘ exophthalmic goitre’. Graves’ disease owes its name to the Irish physician Robert James Graves who described the condition in 1835!

Who is likely to develop Graves’ disease

Graves’ disease is the most common autoimmune disease,  Yet most people have never heard of it! It affects 0.5% of the population in the US, and represents 50-80% of cases of hyperthyroidism.

It occurs more commonly amongst women, smokers and patients with other autoimmune diseases or a family history of thyroid autoimmunity.

If you are suffering with Graves’ disease or know someone that is effected by this then I hope u found this informative and helpful in understanding the disease more.

Please understand that I am not a medical professional so this is just I formation I have found from various medical websites and information from my own endocrinologist. If you wish to learn more about this disease I urge you to do your own research.
