flash reviews, 11/29

hey all, here are some recent album listens that i feel like talking about

yuragi - 'nightlife ep' [2016, dream pop]

the thing I love about dream pop is its balance between soft and hard moments, and nightlife delivers both in equal measure. it's the kind of music to drown out thoughts to, and the singer's voice is absolutely gorgeous. there's enjoyment to be found in every second of this ep, at least for me

fav song - 'night is young'

yeule - 'softscars' [2023, dream pop]

genuinely fantastic! i loved the noise pop influences. i have no prior experience with this artist, but this release was wonderful, and may be among my top for the year. again, filled with plenty of loud moments and plenty of soft moments, with particularly fun percussive elements and nostalgic synths

fav song - 'dazies'

smiling broadly - 'smiling broadly' [2023, noise pop]

if these are outtakes from their upcoming album, then i'm so stoked to see what they do next! the voice synths in particular aren't as abrasive as some i've heard before, leading to a really enjoyable experience. perfect mix of bleeps and bloops with drums and guitars, something i've come to really admire

fav song - 'impish thing'

feed me jack - 'ultra ego' [2016, math pop]

sophisticated and melodic. you can tell they have a lot of fun playing around with various time signatures. i have to agree with a reviewer on RYM, it's technically impressive, but not to such a degree that the group comes across as snobbish. unique lyricism too

fav song - 'move your still'

i'm trying to grind to 400 albums and eps by the end of the year, i'm sitting at 338. send luck pls T_T
