Game Review - NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139...

I'm actually doing these game reviews I mentioned in a past bulletin so here we go.

NieR Replicant 1.22... is a Remakester of the original NieR Replicant from 2010 which was a Japan exclusive. Not that the game wasn't available in the west. The original NieR game had 2 versions: NieR Replicant and NieR Gestalt. They are essentially the same game except in Replicant, you play as a 15 year old who is Yonah's brother and in Gestalt, you played as a 39 year old who is Yonah's father. Thus both nicknamed Brother Nier and Daddy(Father) Nier.

NieR Replicant was a Japan exclusive and NieR Gestalt was a western exclusive.

Enough about old games, time to talk about NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139...

As I mentioned before, NieR Replicant ver.1.22... is a remakester of NieR Replicant. The word Remakester was chosen by the Creative Director Yoko Taro. He expressed that the game did not have enough new content to count as a Remaster but also has too much new content to be considered a Remake. So he mixed the terms to make Remakester. It's also where the ver.1.22474487139... comes from, 1.22474487139 being the square root of 1.5 since he didn't want to call it NieR Replicant 1.5.

Finally we can start talking about the actual game.

Gameplay(7/10):

The gameplay is quite simple with a semi-open world map with loading screens between areas. The player movement is just running, leaping and a double jump along with some other forms of transportation being introduced as you play the game. This amount of mobility is more than enough for the limited size of the maps and is satisfying to play around with.

The combat is also nothing special. You fight against shades which have relatively easy to understand and learn attacks. The player is given 3 weapon types, all with different movesets and you can swap between weapon types without pausing combat. The game has lots of weapons which you can find around the map, by doing quests or by purchasing them. You can upgrade each weapon 4 times and some weapons even change appearance as you level them up. Along with your aggressive moveset, you also have two defensive options which are evading and guarding. If you evade while moving towards an enemy, you quickly dash behind them which gives you an opening to attack. If you guard, you simply don't take damage from the attack but your guard can be broken if it takes too many or powerful hits. You can perform a parry by guarding right before an enemy's attack hits you, which then slows down time and gives you one second to either light attack which does a powerful attack on the ground or heavy attack which makes you throw the enemy in the air for aerial attacks on the enemy.

Story(10/10):

Story has to be the strongest part of Nier. It's a story filled with despair and dread, not afraid to be dark and negative when it has to. It shows the harsh reality and no event in the world is ever black or white. It does an amazing job of showing every story has multiple sides and the good or bad things can be interpreted way differently. I am unable to go into more details since I have to avoid spoilers but NieR Replicant has a story that is sure to leave you questioning everything.

Along with the story, the NieR franchise has amazing world building with a very detailed and neatly crafted lore.

Music(10/10):

NieR music is nothing short of absolute perfection. It helps a lot in getting you immersed in the story and are amazing to listen to in your free time aswell. Music is something NieR is most known for second only to it's story with Keiichi Okabe being an absolute master of the arts. Every single melody in the game is an experience on it's own, be it you hear it in or outside of the game.

If you want a good example for the music, Song of the Ancients - Devola is an amazing song which is very prominent in the game. It's one of the best songs and also the most iconic.

Overall(9/10):

NieR Replicant overall is an absolute masterpiece of a game with a slight downside being the mediocre gameplay. If you are in the mood for a game that will blow your mind, I would totally recommend the NieR Franchise and especially NieR Replicant.

Thank you for reading :>
