tw: language, burnout
ah, studio mappa. quite the talented studio, according to literally everyone. they've animated ridiculously popular IPs time and time again, with fucking INSANE animation. it's common knowledge that that culture around work in japan is already ridiculous. animators are already underpaid as fuck in all parts of the world, but it's even worse in japan. mappa animators are allegedly PASSING OUT ON THE JOB FROM BURNOUT. and the CEO is still putting the blame on the artists. what. the. fuck. they have had to create 19+ episodes of jujutsu kaisen* and an entire 90 minute finale to aot.
at this point (i'm very much a pessimist so bear with me) i'm genuinely worried that jjk might be cancelled. i am BEGGING for it to go on indefinite hiatus for the animators' sake. on a slightly different note. jujutsu kaisen is DEEPLY personal to me for many reasons, and i don't know if i could bring myself to read the manga knowing it would never be animated. i am disappointed in humanity.
and you can't even blame japan's culture around work that much, because there are EXAMPLES of other studios that treat their employees like humans. kyoto animation, studio ghibli, ufotable, I COULD GO ON FOR HOURS OH MY FUCKING GOD
*the average jjk episode contains about 20 minutes of actual content (not including recaps, intros/outros, etc.). as of this rant, at least 380 minutes have had to be animated (probably more, this is a modest estimate tbh), aka around 6.4 hours. add the aot runtime and we have 7.9 hours.
7.9 hours. 24fps. 360 employees. in less than a year.
if you have ever even spent 5 minutes trying to animate, you know how fucking insane those stats are. what. the. hell.
but yeah angry mappa rant. fuck you, manabu otsuka.
(and fuck cloverworks for my petty reasons)

i feel so bad for the animators, + i think it’s cause company’s are getting greedier for money they purposely push so much work on to them
