Intro
Community is one of my favorite shows of all time. This blog will be ranking all 6 seasons of the show. Remember that these rankings are my subjective opinion!
6: Season 4
Surprising nobody, the show’s most maligned season makes it to the bottom of my list. While the season has certain episode premises that would have been done well, it comes off less genuine than previous seasons, and more focused solely on “The Gimmick”
Pros (Yes, there are some): The acting is good, even if the writing isn’t always great. The scene between Jeff and his dad is a well-done monologue that I think explores Jeff’s character well. Rachel is a cute side character and I enjoyed her episode a bit. Some scenes are funny, and I liked the episode where Troy and Abed “body swap” . Points for this being the last season where the main cast is all together (minus Pierce for a good while)
Cons: Half of the homages make no sense. In previous seasons, a lot of the homages are meant to further a theme of the episode and make sense narratively. In this season, it’s more like the writers just wanted to reference movies. They also do a horrible job at half of their homages LOL. The finale is bad and just seems to be focused solely on bringing back certain running gags from the show, such as the darkest timeline and paintball. The twist is extremely cheaply done as well. Troy isn’t given much room to develop as a person apart from Abed in this season as well, which is unfortunate considering he would leave the next season.
5. Season 5
At fifth place is the show’s fifth season (LOL)
To be honest, I find this season to be…mostly forgettable. Certain episodes I remember well, but out of the 13 episodes in the season there’s only about three or four episodes I actually enjoyed.
Pros: The show manages to get back on its feet after season 4. The season hits the emotional beats with Troy leaving, but also has funny episodes like the Ass Crack Bandit episode.
Cons: Troy leaving takes away one of the best parts of the show. Like I get why it had to happen but it sucks. A lot of the newly added characters, like Hickey, I didn’t really find funny or interesting tbh. The show also just feels tonally different from this point.
4. Season 6
The 6th season makes some improvements upon its predecessor, with the addition of better side characters. The season also has some funnier episodes, such as Wedding Videography.
Pros: Frankie and Elroy are decent additions to the cast. The Dean, one of the funniest characters, gets a lot of screentime in this season. The interactions between the study group are wholesome to watch a good amount of the time.
Cons: Jeff and Abed have a weirdly written dynamic in this season. Lack of Troy makes the season feel a bit bleak (though we do get some good Annie and Abed scenes) The season is Super mean to britta.
3. Season 1
In the first season of Community, the show is relatively normal compared to what it would eventually become. However, it remains a good season of sitcom television that introduces the characters in a fun and exciting way.
Pros: Though it takes a while to get going, it really gets good near the end of the season. And even before then, the episodes are still fun to watch. The characters are introduced well, and we get a good feel for who they are in this season and where their arcs are going to go in later seasons.
Cons: Due to this being the first season, some characters are still being figured out, so they do change and become more dynamic later on.
2. Season 2
This was a SUPER close tie for first place. S2 of this series is when Community starts becoming Community to me.
Pros: Tons of wonderful episodes (zombies, christmas special, paintball, conspiracy theories just to name a few), characters are more fleshed out and the Troy/Abed dynamic really starts getting really good here.
Cons: Very little! Some episodes aren’t super good, and the romantic subplots aren’t my favorite.
1. Season 3
This is it. This is Peak Community. This season does not give a damn what executives think and just goes balls to the walls with weirdness and I Love it.
Pros: Barely any episodes I dislike. Has standouts like Remedial Chaos Theory, the Troy and Abed breakup arc, a musical episode, the introduction of the Dreamatorium, and the darkest timeline. The season has a good focus on Troy and Abed and their characters, and they’re two of my favorite characters in the show so I’m biased towards this season because of that.
Cons: This season plants the seeds for the Troy/Britta pairing, which I wasn’t fond of.
Anyways that’s it for my blog!!!
Have a wonderful day ^_^
