can we have a serious convo about online safety?

It is not safe to list your triggers, your age, your home state/town, your mental illnesses, your trauma, etc. etc. on your fucking profile.

It is not safe to compile every fact about you into a blog post where literally anyone can archive it, copy it, save it, and use it against you. And I mean this— people WILL use it against you! We've got a sorta-nice, sorta-safe community here, but this website is not limited to just the safe parts of our community. The things you post on here can be seen by anyone with internet access.

You guys have got to be more careful with personal information.

And I only bring this up because I'm genuinely concerned. The information y'all are sharing on here is, frankly, fucking terrifying. And I know y'all see adults with things like their hometown shared on their profile, but that's the difference! Those are adults! They have enough experience to make an informed choice to share information that could potentially be dangerous. You, as an underage person, do not, and you should not be sharing that information publicly.

Additionally, you don't need a "DNI." And the information y'all put on those things is just another target on your back in the eyes of trolls and assholes. No one besides other 13-year-olds are reading them and taking them seriously. There are some seriously cruel people out there who will take the information from those posts and target you with attacks.

Sometimes you will add people that you later discover you don't agree with. That's just a fact of life. When that happens, you unadd them. If they've done something illegal or against the rules, you report them. You don't make a callout post, & you don't spam post encouraging other people to block them, because that's exposing your friends to shit they don't need to see.

Look, I don't expect young teenagers to behave like mature adults, but some of the behavior I see on this site is insane. The witch hunting, the personal information being shared, all of it is immature and insane.

I was a kid oversharing on the internet, once, too, and I fucking regret it. I don't think there's a single adult today who would tell you they don't regret it. Especially on today's internet— which is so vast, public, and dangerous. It's easy to post personal shit because you think you're safe, you think you're invincible, you think no one will ever see it, and you think you're too smart to be put in danger. You're not. Please be more careful, please be safer about what you post.
