Growing Up the Non-favoured Type of Asian

TW: Serious Topic, Mentions of Racism, Genocide/War

Sometimes I think about how not a lot of people know about my country, and that I am not like a lot of other Asian people. I'm part Chinese, but not Chinese enough, I'm primarily Cambodian, and many people only know about my country because of the genocide that happened in the 70s.

Sometimes, I wish that I was fully Chinese, or Viet, or that I was Filo or Japanese or Korean, or even Thai or Indian, the type of Asian that people know about. I don't have doll-like skin, I'm tanner, and I don't have a monolid, I can't do douyin makeup, a lot of my foods are more obscure and etc. I'm not really looked at in a positive or negative light, I'm just overlooked. Nobody knows about our country, or really cares about it. It makes me sad that I can relate to a lot of things that are Asian-American related, but then it's also not like the same thing, because my culture isn't in the mainstream media.

I love every bit of my culture, I really do, but sometimes I wish I was the favoured kind of Asian.

this is one of the main reasons i want to either be an animator or a writer. there are times i think back to when i was younger and how desperate i was, looking everywhere to find at least one cambodian character in the content i consumed. i was in the 5th grade crying over the fact that i couldn't find any so now its become a huge motivator for me to keep pushing forward, just so that i could try to put the characters i make out into the world. it almost feels like a promise to my younger self tbh

That is so real, we definitely need to have more representation that isn’t war related when it comes to our people. I know you’ll do great whenever you decide to do anything related to those things, I only know of one Marvel character who’s Khmer, her name is Silhouette, she’s really bad ass but never featured anywhere.

this is very crushing to read! being from the united states, we're so focused on our politics over here that we end up forgetting about about the rest of the world. i'm not completely conscious of smaller nations that aren't as mainstream because i haven't really read or studied up on world conflict or even the basic traditions or customs of those countries to begin with.

i'm really sorry to hear that's how you feel. i would feel like a ghost to the rest of the world if i were in your same position. i don't want to say 'there's nothing you can do about it,' but the world will only truly focus on global superpowers rather than smaller nations. i've noticed that, but i myself have never really opened my eyes to it until now, reading how it effects someone first hand. you have my sympathy!

Thank you so much for replying, I appreciate your kindness !!

Yeah, it's true that a lot of the time in the modern media, my country is more to be displayed as a country you should just feel sorry for. I think that the only thing that we can collectively do as a society is to educate ourselves and to spread and share culture as often as we can.

You hit the nail on the head with everything, I completely agree with you that America is primarily focused on politics, so not everyone can just appreciate the beauty of countries and not focus on just the aspects of war, which is obviously still important, but there's more to the world than politics.
