as a parent, we mean well. we (especially those of us in our 30's and 40's) lived through a lot of self-induced cringe. i remember one dude, a freshman when i was a sr, who i to this day wonder if he EVER washed his hair because, despite easily being 8+ inches long, was a perpetual matte that could stick up 4-5 inches vertically. i know he bathed, he wasn't a neck beard or incel, hell the guy almost always had a gf from the friend group it seemed. i myself like to wear calf high athletic socks with shorts my freshman year. even in college, looking back, wearing wrist bands and telling the dean of engineering that i wasn't interested in studying mechanical engineering because "i figure i've learned enough with legos and k'nex"...

we just want to try to save y'all some of the same and sometimes, we just have a hard time seeing the kid become, well, not a kid. and, yes, sometimes parents "just don't get it." NGL, the only thing keeping me from looking up "skibidi toilet" on urban dictionary is general laziness and apathy.

now, as someone who lived through the first round of emo/goth/pop-punk (looking at you, Green Day and Avril Lavigne), and i KNOW this is going to sound like a bad influence, but sometimes you just have to find the spaces where you can figure your identity out*. maybe you just have to do your makeup at school. Maybe you just have to wait for the point where you're out of the house in a few months/years and off to higher education.

All in all, though, I can say this: you'll get there and who you are is always going to be changing, don't worry about any certain "thing" too much.
