So I originally stumbled on the Scott Pilgrim novels as I think book 5 or 6 was being written and coming out. It's been over a decade so i don't exactly remember lol but it was a big thing for me at the time. RENT changed a lot of my worldview in 2007 as a college freshman, and SPvsTW hit that early 20's angst of "where am i and what is it all for?" in a similar "time and place of life" sort of way. The movie was a phenomenal adaptation, though looking back I feel like I was starting to slip out of that angst at the time. So, as a 35yo about in the middle of my life, as someone with the house, spouse, and kids, 2 cars, etc, firstly, I'd like to see what Brian expanded on from the previous versions and secondly, does this still hit a spot for me besides nostalgia? Will this be a Clerks 3 of sorts? I mean, I doubt it since Scott is still 23, but let's go for a ride.
Episode 1, stream of consciousness, GO!
- I like the change of sequence for the opening, abridged a bit, hearing the full song was awesome
- maybe I need to go watch the movie again, maybe it's just me, but Cera's voice sounds a lot older, like odd he's playing a 23yo.
- out of focus effect on the character outlines is NOT fun for people with astigmatism, it's making me feel like my eyes are messing up
- "world wide web" christ this is making me feel old. also, CRT monitor... oy...
- definitely like how the "wanna go out" scene is less cringey but still a bit awkward. Scott never seemed like he was desperate, just a bit socially stupid trying to figure things out.
- date pacing is MUCH better than book or movie, and the voice acting feels very natural.
- loving the added "League" bits, adds missing background for all that jazz
- kinda weird that i was just watching MEW like 2 weeks ago as Hera and now again as Ramona. there's gotta be Hera/Ramona cross fanart out there somewhere (and no, not R34 stuff)
- prefer Kieran Culkin's live facial features to go with his sass over the book/animated one
- knives in an angel and too good for scott. this is hardly news though.
- love the ending!
OK, that's episode 1 and my laptop batt is starting to die so I guess I'm signing out for the night. See y'all in the next post!
