“modern music sucks” (updated)

I hate when people say this. 9 times out of 10 they were born after the 2000s so they didn’t even get to experience pre-modern music growing up. I’ve also noticed when people say this they’re only ever talking about pop as if pop is the only genre of modern music. (side note: hating on pop music is lame!! theres plenty of good pop out there, you just probably haven’t listened to it)

i’m tired of people pretending like everything modern sucks and that we should only listen to shit from the 80’s and ‘90s, and i’m saying this as a person who’s favourite artist literally peaked in the ‘90s (however her newer albums are arguably better)

anyway, heres a list of fantastic modern albums you should seriously check out!! they’re good:

-shout out to my friend Cameron who helped me with this list lol, he’s not active but go friend him —> https://spacehey.com/profile?id=2072137

IMO, I wouldn't that modern music sucks, But It's def harder to find a good Banger like in the 2000's or 90's, or even the 2010s

Also, there are a lot of local bands (from different countries) that make music they might like!!!, for example, one of my fav bands is local from my country and is in the underground scene, they're called Neamwave and their music reminds me a lot of Nirvana and other '90s bands

they're not grunge tho, i think they make avant-rock but i'm not sure

I'm here to add albums :D I love some of yours so I'll check some of the ones I don't know (also I love that you included Olivia Rodrigo because it's an example of good pop music)
I'm not sure about every genre hahah but here we go

(Indie) poprockish (some of these are just one of these genres though):
Sir Chloe - Party Favors (2020)
Froukje - she doesn't have an album yet, and it's Dutch, but I really like her music
MARINA - Electra Heart (2012)
girl in red - if i could make it go quiet (2021)
Alex G - Trick (2012)
TV Girl - sorry don't know which album but EVERY time I hear one of their songs it's amazing
Lovejoy - Wake Up & It's Over (2023)

Punk/riot grrrl:
Sorry mom - babyface (2023)
Destroy Boys - same thing as TV Girl
Dazey and the Scouts - Maggot (2017)

Americana folk stuff:
Dustbowl Revival - Is It You, Is It Me (2020)
The Devil Makes Three - Chains Are Broken (2018)
The Bridge City Sinners - Unholy Hymns (2021)

Hyperpop (but this album less than some of the others I'd say):
Penelope Scott - The Junkyard 2 (2020)

Folk punk <3:
Apes of the State - This City Isn't Big Enough (2016)
Pigeon Pit - Feather River Canyon Blues (2022)
Pat The Bunny - Probably Nothing, Possibly Everything (2014)
Wingnut Dishwashers Union - Burn the Earth! Leave it Behind! (2016)

I guess mainstream modern music sucks, but that’s also me hating on pop. just take in consideration that music is subjective, but me saying a certain type of music sucks is also me not taking in consideration. It’s weird lul

to add on to this a lot of older artists are still releasing music today so you can just tell how out of touch a lot of retroheads are, which is crazy coming from myself of all people!!!!!! nine inch nails released a really good trilogy of albums from 2016-2018 and depeche mode released an album this year for crying out loud

A few albums I'd like to add:

Macabre - Carnival of Killers (2020)
Shayfer James - Shipwreck (2023)
Will Wood - Camp Here & There (2022)
Teddy Hyde - Splittsville (2020)
Listen to Terry's Taxidermy. The ending had me in stitches, and the pre-chorus is eargasmic.

This is what I've been thinking. There is plenty of amazing music that has been made 2010's and on... I don't know why people insist that all modern music sucks after listening to like, 2 songs on the radio.

I'm pretty sure those people are talking about radio, top 50, tik tok viral songs and such (I don't have tik tok).

Where I live, radio plays some shitty music indeed. But, sometimes, I can hear some cool ones like Coldplay and even Nickelback (yes, listening to them is better than most songs I have to endure when I catch the bus).

Good music is still being made, people just have to do that job. It's not like you're going to find diamonds if you don't dig.

I'm really into 80s pop, but I can listen to it. I'm more into the 90s. The music industry is just not the same as before. There was a musician that said something along the lines of the music industry was not perfect in the past, but at least, those business focused record label owners gave a chance for singers and bands to put out their product, so they could see if it worked a.k.a gave them money. Nowadays, the music industry is full of young music producers who only want "the cool sound" and don't even look at anything else. They are music know it alls. (I don't remember her words exactly but it was something like this).

I'm gonna leave some recommendations too:

- JADE by LAY (2020)
- Your face by Wisp (2023)
- Pulling Strings by Trade Wind (2014)
- Lay Down by Prietstess (2005)
-Gammelfleisch by Heldmaschine (2011) - if anybody likes german industrial metal
- Cha Cha Cha by Käärijä (2023) - this song is fun
-Sleep is for the weak by The Dreadnoughts (2011)
- Tommy-Gun by Royal Republic (2014) - very rockabilly ig
- Burnt (By the Sun) by Bleed (2021) - shoegaze metal ig - very deftones inspired
- Proper Funds by Tub Ring (2017) - "if the money doesn't show, then i guess we have a problem"
- The Newscaster Told Me to Do It by worm (2023) - drum n bass/trance/ambient/drone ig (?) kinda like Yume Nikki soundtrack
- Anything by Infinite Frequencies (also kinda like the above)
- Chelsea by Dragged Under (2020) - skate punk ig
- Let This Love Lie Dead by First and Forever - they say they're emo, but they have tinge of post hardcore feeling to them.
- swears in PS1 by Adolf Nomura (2019) - idk, it's electronic. I like the sound.
- Over You by TEB (2020) - very reminiscence of europop/eurobeat/eurodance.

by Cass 🩻; ; Report

the industry saying that they care about indie artists SO MUCH but really they couldn't give less of a shit is so sad to me. if you're not blowing up on tiktok, they won't care about you.

Ugh I couldn't agree more, when people say this, I don't think they realize that every generation before them has said the exact same thing abt the music that they like now. It's just an endless cycle....

Very cool rec list! I might have to give some of these a listen. Also you're totally right, it's kinda annoying when people say all modern music is bad :/ like, especially in the goth community I've seen people talk about how the only good goth music came from the 80s-90s when bands like Molchat Doma and She Wants Revenge exist

thanks!!
i’m not familiar with the goth music scene but i’ll have to check those artists out, maybe i’ll add some modern goth bands once i update this list :)

these are such fun music recs !! def did a good job spanning different genres :] you should add some folk/country vibes though !! and maybe some neosoul/hip hop/rnb /jazz fusions... like orville peck, amythyst kiah, allison russell, sunny war for the first part and like... idk andré 3000, illa j, erykah badu type stuff for the second ! :] also if you don't know those artists, Pls check them out !! they're all so good

thanks for the recs!! i’ll definitely update soon with some more folk/country stuff :) while i do have one neo-soul album and a couple hiphop ones, i’ll have to add some more, i think the art pop and electronic stuff is definitely overshadowing them with how many there are lol

I don’t really listen to jazz, but I have a friend who’s super into it so i’ll reach out to him to find some stuff!! and thanks again for the artists, i’ll make sure to check them out

by Cass 🩻; ; Report
