As you all know, Michael Jackson was a pioneer. From Billie Jean to You Rock My World, he helped influence many aspects of music, fashion, and culture. After all, his title of "King of Pop" didn't come without effort. His album, Thriller, still holds the record of the best-selling album of all time, worldwide.
After almost five years, one particular song has rekindled my interest. The song I'm talking about, of course, is Scream. This song is featured on his 1995 album, HIStory: Past, Present and Future, Book I. It features him and his sister, Janet Jackson, in a futuristic spacecraft, expressing their anger towards the media.
Being an impressionable young kid when I first watched, the style and meaning went over my head. I was more focused on the anime clip, as I went through a weeaboo phase at the time. However, ever since that first watch, this song has stayed with me. Only now do I truly understand why.
Recently, I had garnered a fascination with Y2K. I'm sure you're familiar with the aesthetic, especially with its sudden increase in popularity. It was influenced by the technological and cultural change of the millennium, with some calling it the future we were promised but never got.
If you've taken a look at my profile, you can easily tell this era is dear to me. It inspires my art, my expression, and my imagination. It focuses on a time of wonder, excitement, and innovation. Everything seemed possible, and as a dreamer myself, I want to keep that spirit alive.
Michael Jackson was also a major inspiration to me. His music was beautiful, every song sent me on an adventure. My family loved him. Even as a newborn, I've heard his music. He was a major role model for me growing up, a role which unfortunately my father couldn't fulfill. I loved his childish antics and courage. He proved to me that even in adulthood, I could still have fun.
When these two merge, you get Scream. Michael and Janet's amazing vocals combined with the retro-futurism of Y2K is something that I wish I'd cherished a long time ago. The rebellious and punkish tone also adds to why I love it so much. It's a statement of defiance, freedom, and empowerment. It also has Michael Jackson say "fuck", which is interesting.
This song resonates with me deeply. It gives me strength and touches my heart. I won't get tired of listening for a long, long time.
