a deep (really deep) analyisis of vergil from DMC

-spoilers ahead for the DMC franchise-

so we all like vergil right? i mean we all really do. he's cool, a super fun boss fight and the perfect counter to dante's entire character. however i feel like there is a major gap in how we view this character. He's not some evil rival for the sake of being an evil rival. But instead he is shown to be a deeply traumatized and afraid individual, coping in the only fucked up ways he knows.

childhood

as revealed in DMC 5, dante and vergil's mother was basically murdered directly infront of them. this would naturally fuck up how vergil see's the world. the death of his mother compacted with the fact he never met his father most likely made him feel alone and powerless, the only "person" to guide him was his own perception of his father (sparda). and this perception led him to seek nothing but power, in the attempt to even somewhat match up with his father's legacy and strength. now, this want for strength isnt inherently bad, its just that his ways of approaching this were.... unethical at best. this lead to him and his brother having a deadly hatred for eachother, even if neither of them truly wanted it

Nelo Angelo

if you somehow dont know, nelo angelo was the main antagonist of the first devil may cry game, a demonic entity hellbent on stopping dante. this was of course vergil. so unbelievably corrupted by his drive for power that dante doesn't even recognize him. This transformation started when vergil sealed himself off to the underworld at the end of DMC3 wherein king mundus trapped vergil in a heavy suit of armor and took over his mind. while it is implied that vergil was completely conscious in this state, its also heavily implied that he had no real control over himself, desperately clawing for control over his mind and body back. that idea is not only SUPREMELY horrifying, but is also the reason he acted the way in DMC 5. he was so broken by the events of mundus, humiliated by the defeat from his little brother and desperate for any type of way out. and he found it...

the events of dmc 5

at the very start of the game, vergil is shown walking up and brutally ripping the yamato out of nero's arm. not so much as even saying a word while doing so. this shows a different light to vergil, he was never this ruthless or brutal in any of the games prior. again, emphasizing his desperation. he then proceeds to SPLIT HIS HUMAN AND DEVIL SELF APART FROM EACHOTHER.
this is not an exaggeration, vergil wanted power so bad he destroyed ALL of his humanity to become the demon urizen. whilst his human form - V - was left stranded with nothing but a few familiars. Once dante and the gang defeat awakened urizen, V walks up to fuse with Urizen, bringing back vergil. A vergil who is hungry for a rematch

he allows dante to heal up from his wounds and waits atop the qipholth for the rematch to truly begin. Naturally he gets his ass kicked by both dante and his son, nero. yet, there is no real hatred here anymore. nero slapped some sense into both of them and showed them how futile this sibling rivalry is. they both jump into the underworld, to seal it away and protect any demons from coming further, finally achieving the power of his father

conclusion

if you made it this far through this post, i appreciate it!

to wrap up, vergil only wanted to be strong to be like sparda. however the way he went about it is EXACTLY how a traumatized, emotionally immature man would act. instead of thinking rationally about anything. He dives into plans that will inevitably get him more fucked up. first getting corrupted by mundus and then splitting his human half away in a desperate claw for more demonic strength. vergil may be immature and reckless, but there is definetly a light buried deep within
