(rereview)
- Intro
an absolute perfect and destructive record, the guitar sound is kinda the same as Knocked Loose's ''Upon Loss Singles'' cuz it's so fucking explosive (but Knocked Loose is of course way more downtuned) and can we all just take a moment to appreciate Mario's drumming? he's a fucking beast and needs to be recognized more.
this album immediately starts of with a bang and one of my personal favorites of this record,
- Ocean Planet, from the moment it starts with the whale sounds you know that ''oohhh fuck it's happening'' and then THE RIFF COMES, it's so heavy, seriously such a heavy moment on this album, the song is about the beginning of this album cuz this album is actually a concept album, and the start is about the anonymous protagonist telling about his world, the ocean planet, ocean planet is the planet mars and in some cultures mars symbolizes war but this is an obvious metaphor for the earth after the pollution. He tells that his world is destroyed by war and will try to find the flying whales to learn to fly, so he could fly to Sirius C, a start where the master race is, a race that came 400.000 years ago to guide is civilization. It's phenomenally written, crazy shit, the moment Joe says THE OCEAN PLANET IS ON BURN, sends shivers go down my spine as the breakdown comes with the signature guitar scrapes and then you can't help but to headbang.
- Backbone, seriously having some of the best technical guitar playing and drumming, and again, phenomenally written, seriously the song's about the protagonist changing himself in a spiritual journey to be prepared to travel to the flying whales, you can't help but love it (except if you're such a sour person as that one Sputnikmusic reviewer that gave this album a 4), and again THE END IS SO HARD, it's amazing.
- From The Sky
another banger, with the guitars immediately kicking in with tremelo's and amazing drumming (if you didn't know Mario is such a good drummer, seriously one of the best), also after the tremelo's and amazing drumming, they do their signature scrapes and Mario doing his normal business of being an absolute GOD at drumming, his double bass techniques are really something, the song's about the protagonist's planet, how it was created, how it evolved and how it was destroyed by pollution and war.
- Unicorn
just a nice calm moment with some beautiful sounds and whale noises, the song symbolizes the flying whales calling the protagonist, that's why you hear the whale noises.
- Where Dragons Dwell
is another one of my favorites, just that riff alone is so oddly beautiful that it just makes it awesome, something about the way they do their bends with the guitars is just euphoric to me, Mario FINALLY calms down with his drumming and is just drumming normally and still finding a way to make it interesting in some way, this song is about the protagonist telling about his own negative emotions, about his expectations on the journey, he embodies his negative emotions as dragons. the ending is also very good of this song, just the repetition just drives it home, idk man but Gojira has one hell of a way to repetition fun (also the drumming is again BONKERS at the end).
- The Heaviest Matter Of The Universe (your mom)
probably one the heaviest song on here (hehe) it's super heavy, whilst being incredibly fun, i actually know how to sing Gojira lol, this was one the first songs that i learned from them, probably cuz it was the shortest so i didn't have to study a lot of lyrics but still it was very cool, also one of the first tracks i head from them EVER, the lyrics follow Where Dragons Dwell's lyrics, still speaking about the protagonists negativity but when he is traveling and finds the first trials, he starts thinking that he won't achieve it, these negative emotions are the heaviest matter of the universe.
- Flying Whales
OOOHHHH BOY THIS THE PART WE'VE ALL BEEN WAITING FOR, Flying Whales is insane, from the intro to the middle part to outro it's an absolute banger, which is crazy for it's length, it never gets boring, not even once, even the long intro doesn't matter, it's an absolute perfect build up to such a destructive song and then comes the riff, the riff is seriously the best thing that has been ever conceived in metal, the way the song progressives as well, it's seriously so smooth and almost unnoticeable which is insane, this immaculate song is about the protagonist finally getting to the flying whales, and starts watching them, they don't speak but they transcend their knowledge, he learns to fly by studying them, so he starts to fly out of mars. An immaculate song from the writing to everything. ALSO THE ENDING OMG, everything from the disgusting way Joe screams BRREEEEAAAATTTTHHHHH
- In The Wilderness
also another heavy one, no but seriously it doesn't get heavier then this one, it's actually astounding how heavy this song is, from the riffs to again, the insane way Mario plays his drums, ALSO the riff at the (sorta) chorus is so heavy, i love the bends they do on that part, the protagonist travels to a far planet where there is a great landscape full of nature. He realizes the potential of nature, so he finally decides to change his way and and save mars from the war. Also, the ending of this song is seriously so good, repetitive, yes, but awesome nonetheless, seriously the shortest 3 minutes of my life.
- World to Come
the most repetitive song, but still just awesome, the riff is just so good and Gojira knows what they're doing and just knows how to not make you fall asleep to repetitive songs, the song's about is about the protagonist having a dream where he sees another landscape full of nature, and him realizing that place is his own planet, at least, that was his planet, now it's destroyed by war, he discovers that there's still hope for his planet. so he finally decides to travel to Sirius C and honestly the sound of this is pretty much filled with hope, mainly cuz Joe's screams different, i think they are different, idk man, it feels different tho, also it does switch up eventually, and it's amazing, love it to death.
- From Mars
the half of the title track, this is an interlude To Sirius (hehe see what i did there)
it does contain some singing and Joe had this to say about it: “In some cultures, Mars symbolizes war and Sirius peace. I’m simplifying! It is a journey of a state of war, even if in France we are preserved, but it can be a war within us, in our flesh, in our mind, a war with ourselves”. in the context of the album tho, it's about the thoughts of the protagonist as he travels to Sirius C.
- To Sirius
after the splendid transition From Mars To Sirius, we get the second half, To Sirius, another insane heavy one, it's seriously so good, this was one that my dad even could handle and i had to turn it down, that's how heavy it is, from the guitars basically abusing you with how heavy it is, from Joe's aggressive and insane screaming, from the UNRELENTLESS drumming from Mario, that goes so insanely hard and is such a fucking masterpiece that you can't help but love it. the song's about meeting the master race from Sirius C and learned about the master race and talked with them and they give him the key to save his planet from war.
- Global Warming
probably the most emotional track of this record, my mothers least favorite song from this album cuz of the repetition of the guitars getting to her head but i love that, it's so fucking amazing, also that they've almost never played it live, only once on youtube which i watch everyday religiously, is fucking great, i love this song to pieces, the protagonist learns some things about this race, like the fact that they came to mars thousands of years ago to guide his race. Finally, he returns to mars and starts healing the planet. He will see his children growing.
- Outro
This album is a fucking masterpiece, maybe even one of my favorite albums, i'm so happy i got this on a picture disc, this album has no skips, the moment you put it on, you're in for the ride and you don't even dare to press the pause button, btw if i wasn't so sleep deprived this review could've been better, i'm literally writing this at 2 am in the morning so if it's inaccurate or just blatantly wrong just let me know and i'll edit it lol
edit: i fixed a lot already cuz i'm sane again
Favorite tracks: ALL OF 'EM
