I do observe, and I don't work on a Saturday much anymore (I used to perform in street shows at home in Portugal and in Spain, France and Italy on Saturdays). I am not a stickler for the full extent of the Laws about the sabbath, I go to synagogue and I spend a lot of the day in prayer. I don't cook on Saturdays, I have other things prepared.
The sabbath was not instituted for God but for man! Our Heavenly Father, King of the Universe, made preparation for our weaknesses, and the need we have for a break in our routines, so Hashem established the sabbath for our health, mental and physical. God has no need to rest since Hashem is not like humans, with our innate imperfections.
I live alone, and the nearest synagogue is some way away, so I have to make compromises. I am sure Hashem knows my situation, and I am not penalised because I cannot walk to enjoin with my fellow Jews so easily. I spend my sabbath in peace, speaking with Hashem, and reading from scripture in line with what is being discussed.
Today's Torah is Genesis 23:1-25:18.
