Now, usually not many people out there disclose that they're from a town like Leigh, myself being one of them. There hasn't been much for Leigh folk to be proud of musically unless you count Pete Shelley but even then The Buzzcocks are classed as being from Bolton...and they have Peter Kay! Wigan have The Verve and Starsailor as well as currently having a little baby boom of indie bands emerging at the moment so what does that mean for the little town of Leigh that sits in the middle of both? When you meet people and they state what their claim to fame is and you have absolute zilch to respond with that could even remotely come close, it gets you down a bit! Even the people of Newton-Le-Willows can say they're from the same town as Rick Astley ffs! But all of that is starting to change.
This is a band that's going to be the biggest thing to come out of Leigh since Elton John performed at the Sports Village a few years ago, reaping a wave of civic pride across town and FINALLY putting us on the map! They've had a really successful 2020 with their debut album which has been very well received. Now here's the main crux of the blog.
When it was announced on Twitter (can you tell I spend my life on Twitter?) that they were collaborating with NICKELBACK to do a sea shanty version of Rockstar, I didn't know what to expect. For one, I absolutely hate this Sea Shanty trend that's been a colossal ear sore for the last few weeks on social media and two; it's NICKELBACK AND THE LOTTERY WINNERS in the same sentence. My mind was totally blown by this. So today, my curiosity itch got the better of me and I pressed play on Spotify.

Well, it's just fucking incredible, isn't it. I'm not even ashamed to go back on my word and say it. It's brilliant and I've had it on repeat since I've got home from work today. In fact, it's so good that when this pandemic is over, I can't wait to go on a Leigh Dream and watch it go off in Pulp at 5am when the DJ puts this banger on. Absolute scenes will be witnessed.
And whilst we're on the topic of local legends, The Lottery Winners; let's discuss their brand new EP featuring Frank Turner called Start Again. It's such a great feel good song, especially if you're having a rubbish day. I think it's something that we all need right now in the current climate and something which I would describe as a serotonin booster in 3 minutes. Next stop - Leigh Sports Village, guys!
