guys you dont have to censor everything

this is a phenomenon i've seen around the internet over the past few years. Kids keeps censoring sensitive or heavy stuff (ex: racism as r@cism). I know a lot of these people come from Tiktok or Twitter where the algorithm will destroy you if you use the uncensored words, but Spacehey doesn't have an algorithm. You do NOT have to censor things!! it's okay!!

This especially goes for Tumblr and A03, where tagging things is extremely important and censoring stuff can be actively harmful. If someone on A03 blocked 'transphobia' because they don't want to read a fic with transphobia in it, then someone tagging their fic with 'tr4ansph0bi4' is not going to help them. Also if you censor things they won't show up in the search which you CAN take advantage of, but if you want people to see what you have to say then don't censor it.

There are a lot of younger teens on here and I just want kids to understand this if they are interested in old web or niche website things because that's how it works.

that's all I've just seen this so much on spacehey and tumblr recently and it bugs me.

sometimes its not for the algorithm and instead its because they think someone might be triggered by the word, it could also be other stuff i honestly dont fucking know rip

that's tru i agree we should respect if someone says they would get triggered by something, that's a reason i really love discord's 'spoiler' tool.

This culture of word dilution and censorship is so fucking idiotic imo. We shouldn't be augmenting words just because they aren't pleasant to think about, it just serves to let people look away from and ignore the issues that these words are tied to. I mean, it's literally (and I'm not being hyperbolic) a major plot point in 1984 that language is being augmented and restrained in a way that's becoming more and more reminiscent of what people are doing nowadays.

omg yeah my dad and i were talking about that- there's some parts of the internet that really do feel like that. i was in a discord server a few years ago with such strict rules about what you could say and it was so weird. it was like it was trying to keep the server as forcibly happy and wholesome as possible.

people are ridiculously sensitive now about words they deem as "bad/triggering". I feel like the ones that SHOULD be censored are SH, ED, r*pe etc. BUT NOT PETTY SHIT.
