I took a walk in the street the other day

It was nearing two in the morning and I left my dorm building with an energy drink in hand. I rather spontaneously decided to do it on the way back from the vending machines. I took a walk around the block, not as cold as I'd expected to be in November. On the way back, I looked across the intersection towards what I thought would be a nice photo composition. The sidewalk across the street, from that angle, looked like it stretched on forever. I wondered what it would be like to walk down there.

Maybe it's the rush from being considered a legal adult now, but I crossed the road and started to walk down that block. I walked until I reached the other intersection, as which point I realized I probably shouldn't test my luck at walking out in the middle of the night alone with no cell phone, so I turned around to get back to my dorm.

The street I had to cross was four lanes of complete desolation. I took rapid consecutive swigs from my drink and then looked both ways. I saw nothing. I heard nothing. And as I made my way to cross, I was struck by the urge to emulate what I'd seen on television countless times before:

I walked in the middle of the road. I got to hop, skip, spin and laugh and see the traffic lights change for no one. It was the most exhilarating 20 seconds of my life.

I didn't want to get in trouble with the cameras watching me though, so I enjoyed my final moments of being in the road before I fully crossed over and went back inside.
