Why do you believe in your religion? (Atheism included)

I’m super interested in religion as a study, and I want to know WHY some people are attracted to their religion or what drew you into it. A lot of people assume that people only care about their religion because of their ideas in the afterlife, but I don’t believe that’s the case for everyone.

No current religion, I have head canons on it and I don't understand current sciences enough to place myself atheist or destroy my head canons.

My headcanon ranges from what I constructed myself: that we live in a universe formed by purely mathematical beings that suffered a living error which arose us.

To those I'm kinda perplexed by due to being Schizoaffective: That the universe or maybe just me, is artificial and part of a larger civilization that is more advanced than us, but I/we can barely perceive. Some of my dreams lead me to think that I can see outta the Matrix so to speak and physical constants and the world is much different, but still supporting civilized life most times.

i practice yoruba santeria, i have been initiated since i was 8 years old and its a very interesting religion, i dont fully understand most of it yet since im still learning, but as my dad described it, "god is god, if people believe in god in some way or form such as Christianity and any others its all the same its not that there are different gods, its how you worship him, such as god in our religion is called olodumare, hes the higher power," my dad explains it way better but i dont know if theres any way to say why i believe in my religion, but it helps me in some way or form, such as talking to the saints, when your giving them offereings,
most people take it as its witchcraft or that its voodoo, but its not, and alot of people say we worship satan and stuff but its not that, yoruba has been mixed in with Catholicism too such as the saints some of them are seen as the saints in Catholicism, if you have any more questions i can answer them for you if you message me i may not have worded this the best, im not good with my words thank you for your time <3

Atheism: The amount of trauma I have endured proves that either god does not exist, or worse, does exist and is a cruel force of melancholic destruction.

I was baptized in the Orthodox church as a baby. I am still orthodox because I believe in God as described in the Bible, I believe that God came to us in the form of Jesus Christ, preached, was crucified and rose from the dead. Another things that make me believe in Christianity are: the early christians were brutally tortured, yet didn't give up the faith; all the apostles preached for years and years, and all of them, excluding John and Judas, died as martyrs. That's it pretty much.

im an atheist because ive always really been into space, science ect and i personally think that a god doesnt really fit in with the way that i view the world. also, hearing peoples stories abt religious trauma has definitely pushed me away from religion as a whole (btw i was raised roman catholic, both of my parents are roman catholic too)

I've been a Muslim since I was born and my parents (esp my mom) are/were active in teaching me about the religion, so that definitely played a role in why I'm still religious. But I think the main reason why I'm still a Muslim and believe in Allah (God), is because Islam is one of the biggest reasons I am where I am today.

It taught me that no matter how hard things get there will always be a light at the end of the tunnel, gave me a reason to keep living, and kept me somewhat sane and mentally stable during my tween years which have been the darkest years of my life so far. I firmly believe that I wouldn't be where I am or heck, maybe even exist right now if I wasn't born into the religion.

And that is why I still hold on to it even after 4-ish years of having to deal with countless things that very well could've lead me astray from it every single day.

im a pagan and honestly, the reason i believe in it is because of what its offered me that Christianity hasn't. i have trauma relating to Christianity and finding out about paganism has not only given me a less strict, less fearful life but has also made sense to me in the way Christianity hasn't. i find it easier to believe that there are multiple gods for different things that provide different guidance rather than one nameless god who does it all. or connecting with them with divinity and offerings rather than clasping your hands together and hoping for the best. i believe when Christians pray they aren't praying to what they think they are praying to, but are rather manifesting it for themselves in believing that by praying to god that they will give it to them (which is what manifestation is). but also because paganism has taught me many things such as to be kind to nature, to people, and has given me the motivation ive always needed.

I’m catholic but I’m not preachy about it and I’m not that conservative. I mostly still call myself catholic as I believe in Mary and her son Jesus and love the lesson of acceptance, love and forgiveness that is in the Bible. Mary is also just a comforting mother figure. It hurts to me to see how the Catholic Church is as an institution and harmful they can be and the atrocities done in the suppose name Jesus Christ. I’m just very liberal I guess and I can’t let mother Mary go. But yeah that’s me

it's what makes sense to me and the way i feel closest to God/the universe/what have you. i've tried other religions like paganism and buddhism but i feel most connected to God thru christianity. i really don't like to associate with the church because they've (in my opinion) always prioritized a political agenda over actually practicing what Christ taught.

This one seems to be a common consensus among Christians here! However I totally agree with the point on the church being used as a temple to propogate political beliefs instead of religion.

I suppose I lean hard atheist for a few reasons. There's the easy stance that I've never been introduced to a good reason to believe in a god, but that doesn't lead to hard atheism. I suppose the label can be a bit misleading, as a hard stance against one of many proposed gods isn't universal hard atheism.

As for what I can safely assume to be a false god, the Abrahamic god, as described by the followers I've had the pleasure of speaking to, is a logical contradiction. This is also a god who doesn't represent the character portrayed in the religious texts and has changed in both personality and life events as canonization and culture has shifted over the years. If followers can't agree as to what the god is, have different definitions as to what the god is, have accounts that differ or contradict one another, and don't even agree with historical artifacts that say other things about the god, I'm forced to believe that the entire concept of that god can't be made sense of.

My only other thought is I don't know what a god is. No one seems to have a definitive definition, and each person explains their god differently. I'm afraid god explanations may always be lost in translation or rendered useless since it's so rare to find two people that agree to the same exact god concept.

This is such an interesting and well thought out comment! As someone obsessed with language I like and in a way resonate with the idea that if a word or (more accurate in this case) a word can’t be described with a clear definition, that idea can’t be an actual idea, much less real.

I feel like I was drawn to my specific hippie-dippy lovey-dovey fuzzy-wuzzy flavor of christianity because it was the one that fit me best. I've tried wicca and neopaganism and a few other flavors of christianity but I didn't really vibe with any of them. Endless repentance or unlocking the hidden structure of the universe isn't for me, I just want to love the world and everything in it. :>

I’m agnostic bc I think it’s fun and a bit comforting to think that the universe has some sort of presence that can only be described as divine or otherworldly that pulls the world and universe around by red threads (fate)

Ig im an atheist bc I don’t really believe in anything but I can kinda see how some people might believe in things like spirits and stuff like that. I think people usually get involved with religion bc it’s kinda like a community thing or maybe they want to feel a sense of hope or that there’s something bigger to life or maybe they want to have some purpose or guide to how they should live.

Totes agree, this was a reason why I am religious, I think there’s this big belief that people are only religious because their scared of afterlife, which I think is bs and staright untrue, but in reality the reason why people are religious (or not!) is because they want to know HOW they are here and how they came to be. It looks like that on here atheism seems to be the most popular route which makes sense since science is such a real part of reality it would only make sense to most that science accounts for everything especially in terms of creation. Not trying to say that science is false, I admit my wording can be kind of wack, but atheists are just very scientific people and with that territory comes accepting scientific theory to be true because it is based in science, whereas the religious may or may not (hopefully it’s may because no one should denounce scientific fact) accept scientific reality for what it is, but just can’t bring themselves to believe that a theory is true because it really is just a theory.
