Yep, I'm doing it again, ten more songs I think are cool. I don't really know how these would fit with the first list though.
Also, I realized a few months ago that I misspelled "Apollo 18" as "Apollo 13" in the other entry sorry lol
Anyway, on with the list!
1. Dinner Bell
From Apollo 18. I absolutely love the chord progressions and shifts here. Flansburgh's voice sounds wonderful for the backing vocals. I also really like the subject matter they chose (Pavlov's dog). Although this isn't a feel-good song, the references, vocals, and instruments make it an amazing song to listen to. In addition, I really love Linell's vocal lines when naming body parts, they did a good job capturing an estranged effect. The rhythms this song has are also really good; I love singing along, especially since the verses increment syllables.
2. How Can I Sing Like a Girl
From Factory Showroom. This is the first song from this album on this list. It's such a fun and happy song, it feels like the perfect start to pride month, which is when I started listening to this one. Flansburgh's voice is like honey on this song. The intro really sells me on this one, going from rather subdued to confident. I also really love the synth/keyboard here, very quirky yet cute. Even though this is ranked #2, it's a smidge repetitive.
3. Twisting
From Flood. Oh, why must they make the catchiest songs the shortest? Well, I'm more likely to replay them more...Twisting is so catchy, and again, I love Flansburgh's voice. The way he sings "she doesn't miss you" is so nonchalant. I also, again love the keyboard here, especially for the intro (again). Never realized the similarities here between How Can I Sing Like a Girl and Twisting. Pretty cool. Unbelievably replayable.
4. Shoehorn with Teeth
From Lincoln. Again, the first song from the album to be on this list (I need to put Ana Ng somewhere...). The absurd lyrics are amazing, I love them so much! Unfortunately, this song is also really short, and again I wish it was longer (though it'd likely become repetitive). Also, I love the low reeds on this one, and I like how Linell and Flansburgh "share" the lyrics. Letting them each sing a different verse is nice and makes it almost sound like it's in a musical (this is a compliment).
5. If I Wasn't Shy
From Apollo 18. Geez, the swing is smooth with this one. I absolutely adore the chords on this one...and that bass! Upright bass with a guitar is a perfect pair. Despite the obvious grammar error, this song feels perfect. Again, why must the shortest songs be the catchiest? Ooh, and the clarinets really shine, I've never heard a 2nd sound so good. Also, slightly off-topic, this song really reminds me of my oc, Pax (hopefully I'll be able to post his ref by the end of this year). Of course, slightly relatable but the somewhat unhinged subject matter, is super cool. Lastly, Flansburgh vocals. I've said enough.
6. She's Actual Size
From Apollo 18. I fell in love with the original version first, but the live version is just so much better. It's probably one of my favorite songs where Flansburgh is the main vocalist. This song is super jazzy, and that's what makes the live version so great! Oh, and that really long note he sings in the live version, is priceless! I also really like the live version's intro; it almost makes it seem like the song was taken from a musical.
7. Let Me Tell You About My Operation
From Glean. Again, first Glean song on this compilation of lists! Also, this song is more modern, considering when it came out. I usually hate breakup songs, but this one is really good partly because it's so upbeat! Plus, it doesn't (outright) diss the person the speaker is talking about. I love the jazzy vibes of this song and that bassline towards the end is amazing!
8. Women and Men
From Flood. What a cute folk song about human reproduction! It's a little weird to say that, but this song does tell a nice narrative. The time signature is unconventional which gives this song extra charm. Again, super catchy, I wish it was a little longer.
9. Whistling in the Dark
Also from Flood. I absolutely love how weird this song is. That chorus is catchy though. I'm pretty sure we all at some point have wished that we were wanting to be "whistling in the dark"(whatever that may mean for you). I also really like how this song ends with a bunch of random instruments. Kinda silly.
10. Don't let's start
From They Might Be Giants. I find it funny how 80s their early songs sound. You can surely pick them out from the rest! I love the lyrics of Don't Let's Start, they're super creative and non-sensical. I love screaming "I don't want to live in this world anymore", it's such a jarring cut from the rest of the song. Gotta love the unexpected if you want to listen to TMBG...
Honorable mention: (Bangs demo) Snapping Turtles
Okay, I love Bangs, but I also love the lyrics that this demo has. I really wish we could've gotten both! I love the xylophone(?) they use after the chord change, it's super cute and gives it a surprisingly homey feel (though that may just be the quality). I love the little stylophone solo (aw, Linell!), and having the notes be modified to go up an octave on "and Stryker was a turtle" is super cool.
