Weekend Round-up #1

Hey everyone, I'm not entirely sure how I'm going to structure this yet, but here is my first ever Weekend Round-up! I'm going to be posting my album and song of the week, my movie and show of the week, as well as my book of the week and any photos I've taken this week. I want this to be a sort of end-of-week wrap, but also a series of little recommendations of things that I like! So, without further a-do, here's the week according to my faves!

Album + Song:

Teens of Denial by Car Seat Headrest

I think this week, the album of the week is going to have to go to Car Seat Headrest's Teens of Denial. What a great album. Listening to it on CD just makes it that much better. I love the way the lyric booklet is laid out too. Such a solid album, and one of the only Car Seat Headrest albums I've listened to all the way through (I really should listen to the rest of their discography, who's excited for their upcoming live compilation album?). 8/10

No Scrubs - Single by TLC

As for the Song of the Week, I could not stop listening to TLC's classic hit No Scrubs. What a single, it's just fun. And, although I enjoy their debut album Ooooooohhh... On the TLC Tip much much more than their two proceeding albums, I think this song is such a strong one, and it's chorus managed to stick in my head all week. 7/10

Movie + Show:

Jacob's Ladder (1990)

This week's movie was definitely going to Jacob's Ladder (1990). Watching this at 1AM was visceral. I think this one's going to influence me in a lot of ways. What a disorienting and haunting movie. It picked me apart and put me back together. Tim Robbins was fantastic, and the supporting cast was just as good. What a wonky movie that spirals and spirals and spirals. Go check this one out you guys, especially if you like Silent Hill. 9/10

Sense8 (Season 1)

This is an interesting one. I love the Wachowski sisters' work a lot. The universe of the Matrix is such a cool world. I can't quite get away from all the cool ideas and world building present in the franchise. And, I mean everyone is hot too, so that helps haha. However, this one feels a bit strange, maybe because this show feels a bit more grounded it feels a bit disconnected from their other work, but their exploration of sexuality within the show is very interesting. What a bold project for 2015 Netflix. I suppose they needed to compete with HBO's Looking which came out a year before.

So far I'd say the show is about a 8/10. I'm really enjoying it. (Nice to see ya again Freema Agyeman).

Book:

World War Z by Max Brooks

I think this one is a bit of a no-brainer. I mean it's the only thing I've been reading (albeit slowly but definitely surely). Written by Max Brooks and told in the form of interview entries from survivors of a fictional war against the infected, this book explores humanity, politics, and survival in some very interesting ways. It can get rather harrowing sometimes, but I think it's such an expertly written exploration of humanity, and a very interesting way to world build. It's not my favorite book of all time, but I think the format of it's writing and the world it builds within that are enough to catapult this to the top of my list. I'd love to adapt some of the interviews one day, but for now, I must finish reading this book! So far, a 8/10.
