i think that more people should get into old mmos but not for how "creepy and liminal" these empty online spaces can be. im not about to deny that seeing a completely abandoned virtual world made to be full of people is unsettling, but when thats your only reason for getting interested at all its kinda sad. like not in a "haha lol what a loser way" but genuinely in a saddening way. revisiting an empty mmo just to see how empty it is is sad, right? am i just talking crazy??? idk. im thinking about hello kitty online. i never see anyone else online anywhere there and it makes me so so sad. and then theres the mmos that you cant just play again because they were done in flash and nothing's been properly converted so even with shit like ruffle or old waterfox browser clients its a ghost town................. its so upsetting. im so sad. its so sad

like, the hello kitty online reverse-engineering project exists because people loved this game, not because its got vaguely-unsettling early 2000s CG for like all the characters or because an empty Dream Carnival is understandably kinda creepy. it deserves more than being called liminal/creepy.             nobody says that about it specifically but the general point still stands
