Making that Underlight post reminded me: there are a surprising amount of dead (or mostly-dead) MMOs which still have servers running. I LOVE the experience of walking around some place that was clearly some sort of hub zone/capital city, except it is dead empty. You are the only one there.
Myst Online: Uru Live Again is a really good example of that feeling.
I load into a town, and what do I see? A random beach ball, and a line of glowing things. (You can push the beach ball around, it has physics!)
These are the only lights and the only beach ball, by the way. The rest of the town is dreary, cracked, and empty.
But oh, what's this behind me?
Happy new years! (In... the middle of october.) And with such a good view of a nice, not-at-all-terrifying landscape.
I know a lot of people apparently find this sort of stuff creepy, but I find it fascinating! Love seeing it! I should take more screenshots when I look at this stuff.
Maybe I'll revisit city of heroes some time - although, that's sort of cheating, considering it's not actually dead at all. Still, in some areas you can definitely still find that vibe
