Recently, Overwatch 2 (OW) announced their collaboration with the K-pop group LE SSERAFIM (which I will be referring to as Lesserafim), and it's the only thing I've been thinking about. I’m a huge fan of Overwatch AND Lesserafim, so this is just so surreal to witness and participate in.
For a little bit of context on what the collaboration actually is, Lesserafim will be releasing a new music video, and in tandem with that Overwatch will have a “LE SERAFIM-inspired game mode and exclusive in-game items, including Legendary hero skins.” (from the Blizzard news site) Although we don't know the exact details of the game mode or items, they will be announced on October 30th and go live on November 1st.
So, while we don’t know too much of the details yet, OW has revealed the collaboration skins and I am obsessed. Well, now I am, but honestly at first I was a bit disappointed with the direction they chose, since the promotional banner for this collaboration (pictured above) showed the Lesserafim members in outfits and poses from their "Antifragile" era, their second EP that was released last October. Not only do I love the songs, but the styling of that era was so beautiful, so I thought OW was going to follow that direction. Unfortunately though, they’ve chosen something different, leaning more into a pastel neon, street-wear aesthetic. I’ll put some images below from the new OW skins and the Lesserafim styling from Antifragile so it's easier to see the visual difference:
These are photos of Lesserafim during the Antifragile era, from performances and other promotional materials. You can see on the two images on the farthest left & the second image from the left some poses from the choreography that were referenced in the OW collab promotional banner. There were a lot of denim materials, some edgy-er street styles, and a cute winter look during this era.
Here's the M/V for the collab song "Perfect Night", which you can see the skins on each character, but I've also put some screenshots below so you can see the skins more clearly (I would have embedded the video I got these from, but it seems like I can only embed videos from YouTube. This is the link to the official OW tiktok where the screenshots are from) Anyway, you can see here that the vibe of the Antifragile era and this song are very different, along with the skins.
As for Lesserafim's part of the collab, I don't like the song all that much. It's very safe, and sounds pretty different from Lesserafim’s other title tracks which take more creative liberties, but at least the styling in the Lesserafim m/v matches the skins in-game I guess. I am still bummed that I can’t go to Blizzcon to watch them perform, even though I don't love the song and Blizzcon tickets are kinda expensive.
Either way, I am extremely excited for this collaboration, and many OW creators and fans believe that this will bring more positive attention to the game, as it has been slowly losing relevance to games like Valorant and Apex Legends. What I am not excited for is how much these skins will probably cost, as one legendary skin goes for the equivalent of $20-25, and there are 5 skins total being released. Ouch. On a final note, this is a screenshot of a Reddit post about these skins, and I find the idea of these skins becoming so popular that the meta shifts to be extremely interesting. 4 out of the 5 new skins are on "Dive" heroes, which dive (very basically "run at very quickly") more vulnerable heroes (like Zenyatta) and kill them very quickly.
*additional final note: I did the math, and as I have 315 in OW since I started playing sometime in February, that works out to about 8 hours a week I've spent playing this game since I started. Time that could have been put towards a solid night of rest, some creative endeavors, an extra shift or two at work, or truly anything else. I also now have more hours than the person that got me into this game :,)

i’m ngl i’m not the target audience for this but i feel like the skins were kinda underwhelming. like kpop girls are always so cute and fashionable but these skins feel like they threw stuff on them.

i do agree with the song being pretty generic and plain, also on the tiktok the game characters dances didn't match the music :( but the music video was really fun to watch (the OW animation part) and the skins look quite pretty :3

it's cool to see OW still have such an active fanbase even after all their ups and downs. hopefully this is a turning point for the community (as long as blizzard can make some additional changes). OW is a game + universe with so much potential!!

100% agree on this! OW has held on to so many fans through everything because the universe has so much potential imo, so here's to hoping they can turn things back around. thanks for the comment! <3
