This has spoilers for episode 8 season two of ofmd!!!!
So I'm mostly writing this about one part of the finale, not really all of it, but also I do wanna say something about the pacing of s2 too. I'm mostly talking about the death of a character, you know who. Also some of this was things that my friend said to me cos we talked about it after watching
I think the death was entirely unneeded. I read someone speaking on tumblr about how his death symbolized Edward being able to let go of his Blackbeard persona and truly and fully be "Ed." But, I don't think his death was needed to do that. Sure, from the start of the show Izzy had been saying things like "The only retirement we get from pirating is death," and stuff so he was kinda foreshadowed to die from the start, but still.
After Edward went full-blackbeard in the start of season 2, shot izzy's leg off and tortured the crew, Izzy realised that it was not good for him. It was not healthy and Edward was better off when he was with Stede. That stede and Ed need each other. Izzy changed his mind and learned. In the second season, Izzy literally says to Stede how they are good for each other and should be together and allat.
Even then I think that symbolized it well enough that Blackbeard was ready to move on from being blackbeard and change into just "Ed."
In season two, especially after the first couple of episodes, we got to see a happier version of Izzy. An Israel Hands who isn't so dependent on Blackbeard and being his second-in-command. In episode eight, he speaks about how pirating is about family, and crew, and finding something when people tell you you have/are nothing. He is happy and he belongs to the crew. In the episode before that, we saw Izzy truly express himself for the first time, get into drag and sing a love song for the crew.
I really really loved those scenes. They made me feel so happy. It felt like finally, finally, Izzy is becoming a happier, better person (i loved him in the first season after my rewatch, so don't get me wrong though i liked him as a bastard asshole, it makes me feel good to see my fav characters being happy!!)
To me, it felt like the writers were doing something, were telling us that we're not done with Izzy, and that in season three he will grow even more into his own person and we'll get to see more of him when he's not angry and truly expressing himself. BUT NO! THEY KILLED HIM OFF!!!
I liked the speech he gave to Ed, but there was definitely a way to make a speech happen without him dying. AND, his fatal wound being from a shot from a silly pirates-dressed-up-as-the-navy scene running away and heading back to the ship felt so out of place!! And the fact that all we saw was a little flinch, not even the bullet or anything? It made it feel not-very-serious to me. (not that i want smtn suuuper graphic though..)
I also think that his funeral was bad. I was sobbing eyes dry and the funeral passed too quickly. While I was still crying about the fact that this character who has grown on me through the months and episodes was dead, lucius and pete were getting married and all of a sudden everything was happy again!
Some spontaneousness works in this show, but this brings me to another point: the show moved way too fast and didn't give us enough time to process.
Especially episode eight! We go from, at the start of the episode, Stede and Ed not speaking to each other, in very different settings (stede at the republic of pirates, ed at that lake with the fishermen) to moved in together at an inn, leaving the pirates behind?! I would give that at least 2 episodes :/
I really hope season 3 will be a little bit slower.
Anyways! That's all I can think of for now but there's probably more things I'm missing that I might add later.
