Episode 3 is all about how animals evolved on land and it covers lobe fin fishes, arthropods, amphibians, reptiles, and proto-mammals. You would think that means we get a lot of creatures, but once again, the show just spends more time talking about modern animals than prehistoric animals.
I think by now, the show has a set formula that's not going to change. The show would show a minute or two of early amphibians and then spend 10 minutes showing frogs jumping around and trying to catch a dragonfly. The worst part is that even the modern animal segments aren't that interesting since they just cover extremely basic things like eating and mating. The show is a modern day nature show with some prehistoric inserts and not the other way around.
The highlight of the episode was the Permian Extinction Event. For once, something is well explained in the show. It's not a vague statement with many details left out. Everything that is said is in line with the current thinking of how the Permian Extinction Event happened. Whether this info will hold up years down the line shouldn't be the show's concern. I can't fault the show for following the current scientific thinking if new research proves this to be wrong.
The next episode is the dinosaur episode. I think I know what to expect. Hopefully it can surprise me.
