alternate title: REC ME HARDCORE AND DBEAT AND CROSSOVER AND SHI
i use a freeform music rating system that prioritizes whatever gets the point across over concrete systematic ratings but in normal cases i honor a 1 to 10 rating system that doesn’t use fractional numbers (7.5’s and shit). 1 is the absolute lowest i’ll give something and 10 is the highest i’ll ever give something but a lot of the times i’ll just slap some random shit onto something if it doesnt fall into the 1-10 scale. what can i say, some albums are just not on par with a rating scale of such limited expression. call me evil/stupid/whatever but its my rating system not yours.
readers of this blog should be aware that i’m a dumbass and agreeing with my opinion on anything is probably a bad sign
crossover thrash
crossover thrash is a “hybrid” music genre that contains elements of hardcore and thrash metal, as you can probably guess it overlaps with the era where thrash metal was really kicking into gear in the 80s which is also when hardcore punk was flourishing (leaving this intentionally vague because i’m shaky on the details and i usually prefer the music itself over poring over the history and cultural relevance of it — nothing against music history, it just gives me a migraine).
cro-mags - the age of quarrel (rock hotel, 1986)
this was my introduction to crossover thrash. it’s also siphoned into a genre called “new york hardcore” which is exactly what it sounds like, hardcore punk from ny state. this was pretty fun on first listen but i have almost no desire to come back to it. i would totally throw this on when feeling manic or like if im crazy with energy and want to listen to absolutely nothing else, but idk if that would ever happen honestly. its absolutely ape shit crazy, and extremely hardcore back to basics type stuff. rating - ape shit crazy/10
system of a down - toxicity (american, 2001)
this is obviously an alt metal/nu metal album but for some reason it’s tagged with a crossover thrash secondary on that one music website everyone uses so in here it goes i guess. also putting this here because i don’t listen to enough alt/nu metal to justify making a blog post about it. anyways back on topic, you’ve obviously already listened to this album because everyone has, and if you haven’t listened to it, stop what you’re doing and listen to it right now. rating - not crossover thrash/10
anyways i’ve barely heard any crossover thrash albums so please rec me more, onto the next thing.
d-beat
d-beat is named after discharge and it’s basically hardcore punk based off that beat that plays in sonic adventure 2 - green forest zone (“won’t stop, just go!”). that beat was actually “invented” in 1982 or maybe 1977 (who cares) by the originators of d-beat and the genre namesake, who in 1982 released this influential album. vvvv
discharge - hear nothing see nothing say nothing (clay, 1982)
short, ferocious hardcore songs featuring the d-beat in its full glory. i’ve listened to a lot of bands that just sort of sound like they’re aping discharge (again i don’t really know the history or anything) but even the so called imitators put out some great fucking music because of how awesome the formula established here is. d-beat music is addictingly good, so i feel like i did my ears a service by assaulting them with a million albums in this style. rating - 9/10
disrupt - unrest (relapse, 1994)
jesus fucking christ, this album is so so long. on the flip side the playing is there, the songs are amazing and the atmosphere is intense as they basically never let the energy down. in certain situations this can be extremely grating and tiring and a full listen is akin to torture because there are literally thirty songs on this beast, but in the right mood every single song hits and this ends up being some desert island type shit. rating - too long/10
crucifix - dehumanization (corpus christi, 1983)
one look at that album cover and you know this is going to be intense. i thought it was going to be some brutal scary shit based off the cover but i guess i was setting myself up for something way grittier than what i got. that being said, this is still gritty and chaotic, and definitely worth a listen regardless if you think the cover is an over sell or not. rating - 8/10
impalers - cellar dweller (static shock, 2017)
you may have noticed that the disrupt album actually came out in 1994 and this one came out in 2017, making them “neo-d-beat” or whatever the hell. yeah, so if disrupt were a little late to the game then the impalers are a completely new generation of d-beaters. very good stuff here though, i actually thought this came out in the 80s since it’s got that gritty style of the early stuff. however the mix is completely different which is when i realized it came out in 2017 like halfway through the third track, so i guess it’s pretty embarrassing i was fooled into thinking this came out in the first wave. nice job guys. oh btw this is really fucking short but still worth it, just stream it or something. rating - bamboozled/10
the varukers - bloodsuckers (riot city, 1983)
this one has a little bit of crossover (heh) with another hardcore subgenre called uk82 but still has the iconic d-beat. my read on uk82 is that it’s just a broader definition of first wave uk hardcore punk, so i guess d-beat is like a subgenre of uk82. i feel like every subgenre that’s ever existed was basically invented to describe a scene, which makes sense i guess but ugh makes for some fucking confusing genre mixing. anyways this rules, kind of get pink floyd the wall vibes from the lyricism (lol). rating - confusing/10
anyways i think i’ve written enough for one post, i wanted to start with some of the more early hardcore/newer shit that imitates early hardcore because i’m actually trying to get more into that sound. there’s a couple more albums of this style that i know i’m missing but i honestly can’t be fucked to find and remember them and write about them especially since this post is too long alrea

apologypost
apology #1: gonna start with the obvious, sorry for typing in all lower case. apology #2: sorry for including system of a down - toxicity in a blog post about hardcore punk. apology #3: sorry for failing to mention any of the hardcore offshoots like post hardcore or sasscore, but there will be more posts exploring my favorites in these genres and begging for album recommendations, hopefully soon if i'm not lazy. apology #4: SIKE this is a fake apology post, if you're unfamiliar with this genre definitely start with SOAD and discharge then work your way through what you like, if you're more familiar with this kinda music than i am then please feel free to leave a ferocious hate comment and then give me recs (pleease)
