I'm a baby witch, any tips?

I'm new to Spacehey as well, so just a warning ;-;

I've been interested in Wicca, or really any belief or form of witchcraft. I've been into this for a few years, but have only recently actually starting dabbling in the craft, I'm not really sure where to start here.

Many people I've talked to have tried to rush me into finding a deity to worship but I don't feel like I'm ready for that, it'll come to me when I'm ready. I'm wondering if anyone who reads this has any ideas of where to start, what to read, what to buy, ect ect.

I'm tight on money so I can't buy anything to expensive but I already have white and black candles, and a book about modern Wicca I haven't read yet. (I only received it last month)

So, sorry to drag this on, but does anyone have any ideas where to go from here? Any tips or insight, or literally anything would help greatly! ^^

i can't stress how much you should not rush into finding a deity!! your intuition is so right on that one-- i'm so excited for you that you're starting this journey!

there are lot of free resources online for beginning witches, look for pdfs of books, zines, public forums etc, and remember to take any and all opinions (even the ones in books!) with a grain of salt. everyone practices in their own way. if something feels right to you and validates your practice? keep doing it! if something feels wrong, steer clear. if you like rules? follow rules! if you hate 'em, screw 'em!

research everything you're interested in! nordic rune reading, tarot, rune making/drawing, colour magick, the sabbats, gnosticism, herbalism, etc. al infinitum LOL. you can keep a journal or grimoire of your research, but that's not essential if it doesn't serve you

the only thing that i think is important to remember, that's not always talked about when people begin practicing, is the law of threes: energy you put out into the universe will be reflected back on you threefold. i avoid curses and magick that involves others (including love spells, binding, etc), for this reason. if you can't handle that energy coming back your way, you probably shouldn't partake in it! i know cursing and curse bottles were huge on tiktok and instagram for a while (idk if they still are i don't use them much anymore), and it made me really sad to see people inviting that kind of negativity into their lives without seriously considering the consequences. imo, your energy is the most sacred part of your craft, and protecting it to the best of your ability it so important. it is a HUGE deal to involve unsuspecting others in your magick without their knowledge and permission, and it gets glossed over a lot! especially if you're starting from scratch, be super careful!

anyways! tldr: research, don't take anyone's word as law (even mine!), and trust your gut! /you/ know best in your personal practice <3

I've been practicing for many years as I'm a hereditary witch, so I have wayyy too many experiences with failures and weird people in witchcraft spaces. Some things I think are important are;

1. If something says e.g "rosemary can substitute any herb in a spell" with no explanation, don't try to use rosemary like that. If you don't know WHY the herb has that symbolism, your intent isn't going to be strong enough.

2. Don't rush into finding a deity. They will come to you, usually not the other way around. You can technically ask to work with them but it's not ideal.

3. Stay away from closed practices. If you are not native american, that includes white sage.

4. Explore! It took me a while to find out that I prefer divination over everything else. Maybe your talent will be protection, or working with spirits.

5. Stay away from books that paint anyone who works with demons or uses hexes as "evil". There's no such thing as "good" or "bad" magick, your intent is what matters.

5. Often times people will say "research, research, research" and this pissed me off when I was a baby witch because nobody ever elaborated. It seemed like they were just regurgitating shit off Google and other witches (they were), my number one resource is learnreligions.com

6. Speaking of research, don't use religious books for facts about deities/history. Look for books written by actual academics.

7. If you're thinking about making an altar, there are a lot of options. If you don't have space, check out tin altars on Pinterest.

8. Stay away from Witchtok, trust me.

I am no expert on witches, but please remember that all magic incurs risk to some degree, and all magic has measurable successes and failures that you can keep track of. A system of magic has a structure that is internally consistent, 99% of the time things your friends tell you can be fact checked. (Ask yourself - Who is telling you what? Is there benefit to having you believe it? What credentials does that person have?) Enchant for everything, even if you fail it is practice and all practice is good for you. But read your book first :D

Thank you! I'll make sure to read my book as soon as possible, and thank you for the advise. I'll make sure to remember that.
