5 Great Nu-Metal Songs (From a Nu-Metal Hater)

Even though I'm a huge fan of '90s alt-metal, I never really got nu-metal.  With the exception of a few bands like SOAD and Deftones I really don't like this genre.  That being said, there's great stuff to be found everywhere, even in one of my most disliked genres.  The order of this list s kind of arbitrary.

Stitches - Orgy

The chorus to this song is absolutely great.  It really stands out among some of the other mid tracks they've released (their cover of Blue Monday being a great example.)  This band is pretty consistent with their sound, mixing goth, industrial, and nu-metal in a way that is certainly tasteful.  However, with the exception of this track, almost none of them can really hold my attention.

Bring Me To Life - Evanescence

Despite being both nu-metal and christian rock, this song still manages to avoid completely failing.  Some of the lyrics are kinda cringe, and the rap always kills me in the worst way, but Amy Lee's vocals can completely salvage the song, and the instrumentals are pretty great as well.

Falling Away From Me - KoRn

This song is what I thought KoRn sounded like based on how people who liked them talked about them.  An incredible alt/hard rock band that has some heavy riffs and dark lyrics.  It fits all of the conventions of KoRn's sound without completely disgusting me, which is impressive.  I don't know how they managed to knock it out of the ballpark with this one, but I wish they did more.

Brackish - Kittie

This is one of the heaviest and best nu-metal songs ever written.  The guitar at the beginning almost pulls me out until those vocals come in and I'm immediately entranced.  The juxtaposition of the sweet-sounding "Crucify then learn!"s mixed with those demonic screams brings this song to another level.

Duality - Slipknot

Slipknot is a group of extremely talented individuals, and you can hear that talent on display here.  The song features Corey Taylor's clean singing prominently, and it's way better than I expected.  If Slipknot didn't always try to be so heavy, and instead focused on writing songs like this that focus more on melody, they would be among my favorites.

If I came off as negative in any of this post, it was fully unintentional.  I have respect for all of the bands listed here, even if they're not my cup of tea.  I'd love to know what some of your favorite tracks from the genre is, nu-metal lover or hater!
