I saw someone on TikTok saying they never liked the song 'Suddenly Seymour' and that it wasn't nearly as romantic as people think it is because of 'incel-like comments' Seymour makes.
What they had a problem with mainly is the line where Seymour sings to Audrey that she doesn't need to wear makeup anymore now that they are together, and they had interpreted it as Seymour saying that she is more beautiful without makeup, at least to him. They also said some things about her feeling purified with him and how they found Seymour condescending even though he claims he isn't, but I only have something to say about the makeup comment.
That's not what Seymour means at all and we can see that in the way that earlier in the musical that Audrey wears makeup to cover up the abuse she is facing from her current boyfriend. When he is saying that she doesn't need makeup he isn't calling her beautiful, he is saying that she's SAFE. That he isn't going to hurt her. And that is way more romantic.
I think this problem arised from them only viewing the song out of context from the rest of the show, which is a common problem with a singular song becomes that iconic.

10000%!!!!! seymour and audry's relationship is so beautiful, it leaves a really bad taste in my mouth that someone would see the love between these two abused, impoverished people as creepy or condescending :[
ty for leaving a comment! and yes the song is so beautiful within context and i hate seeing ppl bash on it bc they're viewing just a couple of lines in a way that they were never intended
