CRESTT

Over the years, JDRvenge has worked hard on being consistent and producing a lot of music throughout his career. It's nothing to laugh at, and it's impressive, to say the least. But something has always been clear: he has a "sound." I'm not saying that having a sound is bad, but I think most people can agree that JD's sound has definitely evolved while also staying pretty consistent. I will also admit that this consistency in sound made his earlier work with Tremedusa pretty awkward. I feel like JD specifically shined on his own but struggled to keep up with the more progressive sounds Mxnclrr (4sidesoula) and Killsixx were putting out.

But a few months after his newest album, Chronicles of Tragedy, Vol. 1, JD collaborates with Tre's main producer, Crestt, to create Y2K, showing off how much JD has learned over the years. Let's listen to what I've been missing.

y2k

"y2k" smacks you in the face with a palm that says, "This ain't your mama's JDRevnge." This is a totally new side that we haven't gotten to hear much of. You're gonna soon learn that Crestt really pushes JD into committing to a new act. While JD's past productions were mostly slow and homages to classic hip-hop, this project lunges him into the deep end with Crestt's experimental and diverse productions. "Y2K" was a great intro and a statement that yells "adaptation."

breaking bad

Thank God I started watching Breaking Bad this summer. In this song, JD takes on the persona of a crack maker and dealer. Not really, but he does give a great demonstration of his flow changes and references, from obvious Breaking Bad references to shoutouts to past works like LSD Hotel. Plus, the synth melody on the instrumental is a earworm. I think Crestt's evolution is the real standout here. From my perspective, it feels like it came out of nowhere, but I have no doubt about the work he put into what he does. I mean, the proof is in here.

summertime

I think this is the most familiar track on the tape, but that doesn't mean it doesn't hit. While JD's cadence and flow are his usual, the instrumental gives him the power to float on this one, and I love when that type of sound happens. It's really crazy how much a good verse can turn into a great track with the right instrumental. While I don't think this one is the standout of the tape, it's definitely a standout to me, a really good track.

y2j interlude

While JD is mostly a melody piece for the first half, allowing the instrumental to ride on its own, the second half lets JD jump back in with a quick verse. There's also a background voice that I can't figure out if it's Sixx or just JD's voice with compression, lmao. A really good interlude; do not skip this one.

extortion

Lmao, this will totally be fully biased, but I really dislike the "uhh!" sound effect, and I know that sounds stupid, but I gotta bring it up. It really ain't that serious though; it's there for like 20 seconds, haha. The rest of the song is really good. I think this more cloud-heavy drums instrumentals sound better with JD's aggressive voice than his other work, like "IDGAF! 2" from Suiciide Mission. I also like the effects they put on his voice at the end of the track; the mixing is pretty good, I like it. I think it'll sound better live though.

disiciple

I think that the common theme throughout this tape was JD showing how much his flow can change and adapt, and this song should’ve had more of that. I think the hook is pretty catchy but the verse just continues the same flow and it could get stale on multiple plays, never theless, the beat is really nice and fits JD’s flow and cadence.

I’m really impressed by this album, not only this album but the whole TreMedusa group. I mean other than this, I still have #GEN and ##love##live##america to listen and review, all coming from Tre. It’s super motivating how consistent their work has been. It’s super intimidating to anyone trying to keep up that same pace with the quality they bring. #Y2K is not only a great tape, but its also another notch to the belt of the group’s rapidly growing catalog.
