first week since t1d diagnosis

its been seven days since i first got diagnosed with diabetes!???!!?!

there is like so much stuff abt type1diabetes that i just never knew about b4. honestly most of what i knew about diabetes is wrong...

yk how when you were young, or maybe even now, ur parents are always telling you to watch how much sugar you have, because having too much will give u diabetes? well thats like completely not true. like at all lol.. and when u have diabetes its not about how much sugar u eat per day, its about carbs! (which includes sugar, but its also more than that)

and, the reason why i got diabetes is like, unrelated to how much sugar i ate as a kid (which was, a lottt of sugar, but, yk. the diabetes is unrelated!!!). the doctors think what happened was my immune system started attacking my insulin cells accidentlly when it was meant to be fighting off some illness i caught (probably covid). and now im stuck with t1d! forever!!!!! becos my immune system made a mistake.

but! its actually not as bad as i thought it would be, because im still able to eat any foods i want to, as long as i give my body the right amount of insulin (and yk, i cant completely gorge myself on sugar or anything, but really i shouldntve been doing that Before, either). i always thought that diabetics could like never have any sugar or else they'll die or something. untrue!!! and im still able to eat at restaurants and have fast food and drinks and stuff. its just a little more complicated and needs a little more planning now.

(needles cw 4 tha next paragraph, not explicit)

im nervous about getting/giving myself insulin, because ive always been a huuge wuss with needles... one time when i was a kid and getting my flu shot, i cried so hard everyone else left the waiting room. lol. and when it comes to insulin, it comes to needles and needles and needles. becos the only way im able to take the insulin is thru the fat in my body or smtn, i cant swallow a pill or anything :/// i injected myself for the first time yesterday! which was a huge step for me, because ill need to start doing it everyday at school. yikes... but i guess im just going to have to learn how to do it. (at least until i can get a pump! which does it for me, but thats not for like a year or smtn)

did you guys know there are different types of insulin? i didnt until this week. theres three types; long, intermediate, and fast acting insulin. its pretty explanatory, the fast acting insulin works itself in your body over the course of a few hours, and the long acting insulin over the course of the whole day. i think your body needs both kinds to live. insulin is what takes the sugar and carbs u eat that have gone into your blood, and sends it across ur body. ur pancreas makes insulin, and in most people they never have to worry about it cos their pancreas knows how much to make. nut for me and other type 1 diabetics, our pancreas have stopped making insulin (type 2 is alittle different, becos they still make insulin but their body is unusually resistant to it).

anyway. its only been one week but theyve really crammed me full of learning about all of it since then. im sure there is a lottt more that i need to learn about thatll just come with time and experience... unfortunately
