I barely have any writing experience and know nothing about how to write things correctly. But when I used to create characters for roleplaying back in the day I made a personal rule for myself. My characters must have one odd trait about them, such as having a sweet tooth or cannot stand wearing clothes with sleeves. (I will admit I only really did that for more important characters) And if they have a major asset, then they must also have a major flaw.
An example being one character I have wants to always do the right thing, she wants to help everyone and help everyone get along. But she's stubborn and narrow minded, so her views on a perfect world isn't realistic at all.
