Oc rant #24 Rettam: Haegle and Mateo! BROTP question rant

1. Who is more willing to cry in front of the other?
Haegle,
but I'd say both of them are pretty comfortable showing emotion in
front of each other, The only reason I say Haegle is because Mateo will
sometimes try be tougher since he thinks he has to the "reliable one" in
their friendship and crying can sometimes feel to him like it'll hinder
that.
2. Who puts more thought into gifts? Who puts more money into gifts?
Mateo, Haegle. Mateo has a very good sense of what Haegle likes, and Haegle just knows Mateo will like anything expensive.
3. Who is more of a show-off?
Mateo,
ofc ofc. Haegle usually rolls his eyes when this happens but let's
Mateo do it anyways since he at least enjoys Mateo being happy.
4. Which one initiates group-hugs and drags the other into them?
Haegle,
definitely. I do think both of them like giving physical affection, but
Haegle is more open to doing seemingly odd things like group hugs or
starting them at anytime.
5. Which one is braver?
Mateo. Mateo is usually the one that has to stick up for Haegle since Haegle usually lacks the words to do so in the moment.
6. Which one is more likely to be the caretaker when the other is sick?
Mateo,
this canonically happens (kinda). I think Haegle would try his best if
Mateo was sick but I think Mateo would refuse his help. He would pretend
it's because he's humble but in actuality he doesn't want to experience
Haegle's form of care (He would rather dissolve than eat Haegle's vegan
food).
7. Which one is louder?
BOTH.
BOTH OF THEM. Haegle lacks words at times but around people he's
comfortable with he is LOUD. and Mateo is LOUDLY TALKATIVE. The bounce
off each other in conversations, but I'd say Mateo talks more when
they're in public.
8. Which one is the sappy friend who doesn’t hesitate to write sappy cards and things?
Haegle, same reason stated in question 4, cheesy mf.
9. Which one says “I love you” first? (Platonic “I love you”s are Important to me.)
Honestly,
probably Mateo. He uses his words to express care and affection like
that. Haegle also expresses affection through words but he does it in
different ways usually.
10. Which one is more academically inclined? Which one is more street-smart?
Mateo is both, but mostly street smart. Haegle is mostly academically inclined but also eh??? his smarts are put into other things like not jumping off a cliff, Mateo would probably jump off a cliff.
But I think both of them would if the other did.
OC rant #23 Rettam: AOOOOAOAOAO MATEO <333 (big rant and questions list I found) (+ first time posting his design)
this drawing is quite old but his design is still the exact same because i think its PERFECT
hghufhgufhgughfgugh I love my husband
he is so precious,
such a quirky little guy
AUGHHHHHHH!H!H!HH!H!H!H!!H!H!H!H!H!HH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
GIGGLES! mmfhghfg.....
please
ask me about him because I don't have the prompted enough to rant about
him rn so heres some character questions I stole from a website but
feel free to ask questions outside of them.
How do they see themselves?
Mateo see's himself in a very confident way, I think he often overestimates how much charm he has though. What's ironic is that he has like 0 alien pull, or maybe people in space are just too gay and he's straight, he's.. the token straight (I mean you could head cannon him as otherwise, totally possible, but canonically he's straight)How are they seen by others?
It depends, Haegle is ofc his best friend, and sees Mateo as someone who understands what to do and can think quickly, someone who's a lot better at navigating social situations than him. D2 see's him as a nuisance and a criminal in the beginning of act 2, but gradually starts to relate to Mateo more and he starts to see him more as a guy who has the guts to do the kind of stuff he doesn't (essentially speak up about stuff). D3 just hates him, because he doesn't find Mateo hot, thinks he's trying to break up him and Haegle's relationship (he is), and also annoyed because Mateo keeps trying to interrupt him when he's talking by whispering to Haegle. (it's usually because D3 is spewing bullshit)Strongest character trait?
I think the idea of weakest and strongest character traits is odd, because any strength can become a weakness and any weakness can become a strength depending on the situation, that being said, I'll try my best. I think his confidence to speak out is his best trait, he's very vocal and will call something when he thinks it's bullshit. Sometimes he makes a good call, sometimes he doesn't. The thing is, Mateo can recognize injustice when he see's it, but he also is very self-centered at times and will complain about something simply if it mean's it's inconveniencing himself in order to help others.Weakest character trait?
Probably his liking of expensive things and expensive brands, I mean he looses this later after an arc, but still. Mateo really likes being flashy and showing off wealth (this kinda stems from him feeling like he needs to prove that he can get expensive things despite not being a doctor like his parent's wanted, as if having expensive brand names plastered all over him equals his worth.)
How I often describe him for this is "Reverse Robin hood." He steals, he doesn't care who it's from, he'll just steal whatever he can (although he does like to brag when he steals from organizations or from people of higher social status). He then uses this money to buy expensive goods. Sometimes he just steals the expensive brands himself, but he prefers to buy them because he likes giving the cashier a sassy expression when he's buying stuff like he's the woman from Pretty Women. How competitive are they?
VERY. very. at least sometimes, it depends what it is. If what ever is being competed interests him he gets VERY competitive and will do anything at any cost to win. He's also a rather sore loser.
Do they make snap judgements or take time to consider?
This also depends (unfortunately my characters are not a singular trait, how sad (sarcasm). I feel like he's snappy to make judgements if it's someone he doesn't know and they seem like a jerk, but if he's under certain conditions or someone bribes him, he'll lie outwardly and "take time to consider". He also is bad at perceiving red flags in people he already knows and feels attached to (Haegle as example)
How do they react to praise?
He's surprisingly a bit coy when it comes to praise, I think it's because he's used to being put down by others. He's normal and outwardly enjoys it if it's about his appearance, but if it's praise about something he's done or about him as a person, he'll either feel it's undeserved/they have a wrong impression of him or he'll just be confused and awkwardly accept it after a moment. This changes later on in the comic.
How do they react to criticism?
Acting normal and then crying about it later, either figuratively or literallyWhat is their greatest fear?
Birds, jk, well, it is, Mateo is horrified of birds, but he's also horrified of things kind of being out of control or unexpected? It's hard to describe but like, if he finds out something he thought was a truth he could trust and rely on is actually a lie, it's a very distressing experience. He's a bit paranoid about his good impressions of people tarnishing. What are their biggest secrets?
I wouldn't say he has any major secrets, he over shares a lot. One thing he does try to keep secret is that he was going to study to be a doctor, Porcious is the only character who knows of this for most of the comic. What is their philosophy of life?
steal to live, live to steal. Kidding, I'd say he has a positive attitude but slightly pessimist view of life in the first part of the comic, inherit from his parents. The type of attitude that says "The world is shit anyways? Why should I care about trying to act in the best interest of others.". By nature Mateo is very sympathetic and empathetic though, so that talk is all bark and no bite most of the time and he ends up trying to help others anyways. When was the last time they cried?
Last night, kidding, maybe not, who knows, but he's definitely not afraid to cry. What haunts them?
........ probably having to leave Haegle with that cult and then seeing on the news that he was part of a terrorist attack. What are their political views?
Changes over time, he was pretty liberal at the beginning of the comic but he starts to shift toward anarchist by the end of the comic.Who do they quote?
I'd imagine Mateo regularly quotes celebrities, if he was alive during our era he would continuously quote 2000s music artists. Are they indoorsy or outdoorsy?
Outdoorsy, definitely. The only time he's going indoors to have fun is a nightclub. What is their sinful little habit?
Theft, scamming, and actually liking peanut butter. Sometimes he also likes to be a bit of a dick and rearranges things in Haegle's quartersWhat sense do they most rely on?
IntuitionHow do they treat people better than them?
Kick em in the shins (he has a bit of an inferiority issue at the beginning of the comic). He only dislikes them if they're doing better financially or have legitimate status. If someone is morally better than him he usually feels more inclined toward them and admires them a bit.How do they treat people worse than them?
It depends?????? this is just a weirdly worded question, the last one was too. if you have a better way to word this you can ask it in the comments. What quality do they most value in a friend?
Trust. Also probably being on the same page about stuff. Mateo values when he has someone he can feel like they're in sync or part of the same harmony. What do they consider an overrated virtue?
At the start of the comic, giving. At the end of the comic, taking. If they could change one thing about themselves, what would it be?
Aughhh, I mean, hm. He's very secure about his looks so he wouldn't change anything about that. I think at the start of the comic he kind of wish he wasn't so impulsive as too sometimes upset people around him when he didn't initially want to.What is their obsession?
at the start of the comic he has this obsession with Hallmark* branded stuff, such as his crown tank top.
*(In the comic's, Hallmark has become this humongous monopoly over several areas of production as well as a sought after brand. It's weird, I decided it after a joke I made to myself in a parking lot during Christmas)
He also loves perfumes and gold jewelry. He wears as much gold as possible and if he's going somewhere fancy he sometimes goes overboard with the scents. What are their pet peeves?
D3, he is the pet peeve. He gets annoyed around officials and anything close to a cop.
If someone has a stuck up attitude he'll usually get very annoyed as well.
He hates silence so he fills it up with talking and chat. What are their idiosyncrasies?
He's a man of many contradictions, he'll pace around trying to even figure out what he should do in a situation if it brings two opposite sides of himself into direct conflict.
He likes to queerly hold stuff and lick spoons clean, it's really weird, Haegle is weirded out by this but never mentions it.
He extends words and sounds when he says things, like "Riiiiight?" "yeaaaaaaahh..."
OC rant #22 Rettam: Whatever, D2 x Haegle rant.- NEVER FUCKING MIND I DERAILED IT HALF WAY
ITS JUST
OC rant #21, ???: i wanna make My OC's but they're in hetaoni or Ao oni or whatever you wanna call it
This idea has been festering in my brain for awhile, consistently.
(cw A LOT,,, IDK HOW TO DESCRIBE IT,,, TRAUMA)
I JUST
I love the idea, because Hetaoni is so angsty and i see so much opportunity in trapping my OCs in a death time loop haunted by an unidentified monster.
LIKE (I say as I pick up my green triangle and my red ball) I THINK DAVE AND ARTHUR fit the roles of America and England in Hetaoni very well. And by that, I mean I can see Arthur being a magic user and sacrificing his own health in order to save Dave, and Dave feeling helpless because of it.
also i want the monster to be
Arthur's father, either metaphorically or literally his father as an
eldritch horror. perhaps both.
I plan on making Bax Italy, i
think, i think Bax fit's Italy's role the best. Especially with the
memory thing, I mean, it would be good symbolism for how Bax struggles
to process his trauma.
sorry this is very rambly, my ideas for this are still scattered.
I
want to add in the rettam characters but I'm unsure if and how i should
do so. I was originally thinking I should make the alien cast from
rettam human for it, but i kinda wanna keep them as aliens. It's just
more interesting and also is better for more interesting dynamics. Like,
human d2 and d3 are harder to have a dynamic for than ceedekian d2 and
d3.
And because of this, maybe the mansion exists in different
places, at different times? i mean, it wouldn't be too odd since rettam
takes place exactly 1000 years into the future. maybe the mansion only
looks for victims every 1000 years in various locations.
Yaqba' and u'keb are also gonna be there, I haven't talked much about them though but they are both pretty major character's i'd say. ANYWAYS i'll add more later if i get anymore concrete ideas.
btw this is very self indulgent, I'm just doing this because I find it fun.
OC rant #20 Down: gushing over Dave
I know I say this a lot but Dave is really my favorite OC i've made.
is he the best writen? probably not
is he the most most interesting? probably not
but I hold him intensely dear to my heart.
I THINK FOR MULTIPLE REASONS
Dave
is really my comfort character, mostly because I pushed many of my
insecurities onto him which for some reason I love my insecurities on
him but not always on myself? In a way Dave is the way I trick myself
into self-love.
I think I made Dave like uhhh about a year
ago now? or at least, started the version of Dave closest to what he is
today. I remember before liking him was kind of an ironic thing, because
ofc people kept making fun of him and the idea of him being my favorite
was funny. but as I added more details to Dave and I gave him more
traits similar to myself and people continued to mock him, I became very
attached to him.
LIKE i had this whole phase where I would
defend Dave no matter what because I felt everyone was being unfair to
him, which to be fair it was. They weren't criticizing Dave the way he's
meant to be criticized, aka attacking how he looks physically instead
of his mentality/outlook on life. It got to the point i wrote a very
angry rant in my notes app about the reasons why it wasn't okay to make
fun of Dave's appearance.
I kinda got over that and I cut people out of my life who genuinely thought him being fat was some kind of immense flaw.
IDK
i guess I'm just very clingy tword his character now since I have been
put in a situation of that kind of arthurian mentality where I'm like
"people have tried to hurt you and I want to make sure that doesn't
happen again" WHICH IS SWEET but sometimes a set back, ofc that would be
if Dave was real, which he isn't. that's why this is an issue only
Arthur deals with.
AND ITS WEIRD BC THIS ATTACHMENT TO DAVE HAS LITERALLY EFFECTED MY ENTIRETY OF WHAT I FIND ATTRACTIVE, LIKE, MOST OF THE STUFF I CURRENTLY FIND ATTRACTIVE I DID NOT FIND ATTRACTIVE UNTIL I BECAME ATTACHED TO DAVE
IDK HOW TO ELABORATE ON IT like I like Dave for more reasons but I don't know why I have those reasons. Like I said, It's probably just a lot of built up attachment.

[comical arthur text bubble.png]
I'm gatekeeping Dave (you cannot have him)
[Detailed rendered picture of arthur with a speech bubble over his head (he's doing the motion effect from cap cut).gif]
OC rant #18 Down. : Arthur, my little guy! (he's corrupt) (long rant as usual)
I love and hate Arthur sm, I could honestly rant about his character for hours on end. Which is good, because he's the main character of his comic.
CW IDK! a lot of shit, dead DAD do not eat.
LIKE idk he's just
I like the contrast character conflict. I tend to really adore morally gray characters, and I think Arthur is just one I can be proud of creation-wise. His whole character combats the concept of "Justification". Are his wrong doings "justified" or "excused" by his past? what does "justified" imply?
A lot of the things Arthur
does up until act II aren't clearly bad. He does some things that can
make him come off as a bit of an asshole, and the way he does things are
odd, but they aren't blatantly corrupt.
Both Arthur and Dave
are kind of losing it in act II. Arthur is mourning the death of his
late father, and not in the somber saddened way, in like the manic
confused way. He's angry that even in death he feels his father has an
unreasonable favoring for Bax, someone who isn't even connected to them
by blood. Basically he goes into an internal panic as he desperately
tries to gain the approval of his dead father. As the plot progresses into act II, Arthur starts to give into the
pressure of taking on the more negative traits of his father.
What's ironic is that he inadvertently kind of makes his own messy fucked up attempt at what his perspective of his father and Bax's relationship mixed with his own relationship with his father but with Dave. What was originally Arthur acting as an older brother figure to Dave became him forcefully becoming more parental and controlling of Dave, a full grown man.
This is basically how Dave started becoming restless in his
situation, while his situation initially wasn't good this was his
tipping point. IT'S LIKE, DISTRESSING. SOMEONE HE TRUSTS IS STEADILY
BECOMING SOMEONE HE DOESN'T FEEL COMFORTABLE AROUND, AND HE KNOWS ARTHUR
DOESN'T WANT IT TO COME OFF THAT WAY BUT THAT'S WHAT'S HAPPENING.
and that ends in Dave finally leaving the house
after 5 years of never stepping foot outside
and Arthur just
completely loses his mind
he doesn't know what to do anymore
Arthur does NOT do well with losing control of things. the main thing he relies on is keeping everything in his life under control, and having something as major as Dave leave is devastating beyond belief.
NOT ONLY THAT because it's not just that he's lost control of something he felt he needed to, a constant in his life, he also lost the only thing that separated him from his father.
no mater how many traits Arthur takes on of his father, his affinity for Dave is something inherently against his father's wishes. His father literally hated Dave, he thought Dave was a disruption and a waste of Arthur's time (also his father's main reason was quite literally that Dave was too ugly/vapid, I won't elaborate why, but Arthur's father just couldn't stand to see Dave around his house I suppose. Also probably hated having a loud mouthed kid who could be a possible witness.). And now Dave is just GONE and there's this huge conflict in Arthur.
At the same time
there's these two pulling forces: Arthur being pulled to be even more
like his father due to Dave's absence, and Arthur's attachment and want
for Dave to come back seperating him even further than what his father
would have wanted him to be.
He's genuinely worried Dave can't make it on his own HE DOESN'T EVEN KNOW WHERE DAVE COULD BE. for all he knows, in his assumption of Dave, he thinks Dave is just wandering the streets. on his own.
THAT'S HORRIFYING FOR HIM.
SOMEONE HE CONSIDERS A YOUNGER BROTHER IS JUST GONE WHO KNOWS WHERE
OC rant #17: I admire my ability to achive casual built up tragedy. that's one of the few things I'll give myself
What I mean by that is, for a lot of my OC's, their main
angst/problem is not just major events or intense situations, it's
usually a slow build up of things and the main problem is that they're
stuck.
I'm going to use Dave as an example here, (I was gonna use d2 too but Dave's example became too long)
LIKE Dave isn't living a traumatizing life as of current in the story
of down, he's gone through some trauma but that trauma isn't his main
problem. His main problem is he's stuck in such a,,, draining situation?
Like, Arthur cares about Dave, he make's sure Dave gets everything Dave
wants, essentially enabling Dave. In this, both Dave and Arthur kind of
build Dave his own willing prison. He doesn't leave, he doesn't talk to
anyone in person other than Arthur, He doesn't work unless he want's
too, etc etc. But what he's done is let Arthur and himself make him
almost entirely dependent.
This makes Dave stuck in suck a weird situation, where he feels drained and degraded by the life he lives, but he also can't bring himself to do much about it. The idea of independence after so long is daunting, not only would it be difficult but he doesn't want to feel the shame of not being able to take care of himself.
He also would feel bad for Arthur, he knows Arthur has controlling behaviors, he knows that Arthur doesn't treat him as an equal, but He also knows what Arthur has gone through. He's stuck in this weird debate with himself thinking that Arthur's genuine care for him and Arthur's trauma excuse for how he acts tword him.
Dave
is somehow living a terrible life but also not, I mean, It's obviously
not a good quality of life, but he's technically getting everything he
could ever want. It's just far from what he needs, and he knows that
internally.
Dave's main decision in the comic is "Am I willing to give this up and how am I going/ how would I even move on after this."
OC rant #14 Rettam Kard: Haegle is everyone's frienime no matter where he goes, I love hate him.
HE'S THIS STUPID LITTLE NERD WITH THE AESTHETIC OF A GUY WHO'S NEVER LEFT HIS MOM'S BASEMENT. YET HE'S TRAVELING SPACE, NOT ONLY THAT HE IS GETTING A LOT OF ACTION. TOO MUCH. HE DATES SO MANY MEN CASUALLY THROUGHOUT THE COMIC UNTIL THE END OF ACT 2.
AND LIKE, I KINDA FEEL BAD, BECAUSE BY THEN HE'S ALREADY TRYING HIS BEST TO UNLEARN ALL THE RACIST SHIT HE THINKS IS NORMAL, BUT THEN AGAIN HE'S STILL STRUGGLING TO DO SO.
OC rant #8, Down, sbdhgshgds finished Dave's design? my sweet little guy
I think their designs compliment each other well, at least by act 1 standards.
OC rant #10,547 or something, yk I'm just gonna estimate it's #7: Down., Merlin & Dave (this was the first one i recorded)
yk as much as I say I love Dave as a character I have to restate I
don't think I could stand this man if he was real. at least act 1 Dave.
I'm sorry, I'm just, not willing to hang out with a guy who- ykw I'm
just not willing to hang out with a 4chan user. I mean, he's on the
lesser end of 4chan users. I'd have to be at a similar level low point.
Like
I imagine he's one of those guy's who says something reasonable in a
thread and then ruins it by calling the person he's replying to several
slurs "for good measure."
god i am SO fucking glad he has people in his life who aren't just 4chan users, I do not know how Merlin puts up with him.
I
MEAN ig if I was in Merlin's position, I would also probably stay
friends with Dave. That's kinda a blurry thing in their friendship.
Like, how far is the fact a big reason Merlin is friends with Dave is
because he's worried about him from the fact the one of the reasons
Arthur keeps Dave in his house is because he's worried about him?
I
mean, I feel like the clear line is that the main main reason Arthur
keeps Dave in his house is because he's over controlling of everything
in his life, from his work to his very limited personal relationships.
But
it still asks the question if Merlin staying friends with Dave
primarily because he's worried about him is a good or even healthy
reason to stay friends with someone. I mean it's not the only reason
they're friend's, but there's this blurry line where even Merlin isn't
exactly sure if he's friend's with Dave for the right reasons. I mean
its not a black and white thing, what Merlin is doing isn't necessarily
bad or good in my opinion, it's just a bit thought provoking and is
something that depends on the situation. I will say it has to be
exhausting though, I think Merlin can pressure him a bit too much to try
and help others.
I mean I said earlier, I'd also have to be
at a low point to consider being friends with Dave, and Merlin kinda is.
I mean, he's in a much better place than Dave, I just think Merlin is
very emotionally vulnerable. He's a guy who's unemployed due to mental
health issues trying to figure out how he can make a living that doesn't
drain the life out of him, being stuck in his apartment apart from
short outings or walks outside and going places with Bax. In a way he
kinda relates to Dave, and as someone who's sometimes overly sympathetic
he feels bad for the situation Dave is in and wants to help him out.
I
mean, sometimes it can be frustrating, as Dave is,,, Dave, and I think
Merlin knows he needs to give Dave space/stay away from him at times
since Dave can just get, tiring, and unreasonable, and also a bit
triggering? Unfortunately Dave has a disregard for people's feelings at
times and is very defensive but I think Merlin helped him learn that he
needs to work on that a bit leading up to act 2.
I'm glad it
end's up working out though, I think in Dave's condition there was no
real way to have an entirely healthy friendship with him. That's why him
and Merlin only really connect in the later half of act 2 when Dave is
finally away from Arthur and can begin to be independent.
