Small artists work

I'd like to take a little survey and just see what the general opinion is on this topic.  Do more people prefer a common larger named artist for familiarity?  Or do people prefer their music like art and look for small new material to watch grow?  Does it help stumbling on something new that entirely reminds you of a style you're familiar with?
