poem #1:graduation

Graduation

I remember our late-night conversations

And how we concluded death was a graduation

We were laying down in the lean-to

I asked you what you thought Heaven would be like

Other than, 'Better than you can imagine.'

I remember you telling me:

"It's a kingdom

With a place for all of us

Accompanied by angels."

I said, "What do you think it will feel like?"

You told me, "I think it will be like floating on water

Weightless, nothing pulling me down

I want to hold nothing

I want to feel nothing

I want to be like a speck of dustΒ

Floating into a cornerΒ

Where no one will see me."

I asked you then, "What do you think it will be like to die?"

You said, "Like a graduation."

So it is so

I imagined then a standing ovation, with a crowd saying:

"Congratulations, you did what you were supposed to!"

We were born to die

And that is the truthΒ
