today i took a half tab of acid and drove around. first i went to amoeba music, and then i went on a journey to find lee kum kee soy sauce. it's what my grandfather used when he ran a chinese restaurant back in the 70's. lee kum kee is a big brand from guangdong province, where my chinese grandparents are from. most grocery stores have lee kum kee sauces, but for some reason not the normal soy sauce. even asian ones!
i ended up giving up and going home. worked a little on writing, and in my acid-y self-referentiality i watched "the trip" by roger corman (pretty endearing and friendly - bruce dern is super funny as peter fonda's steady guide to the lysergic world, and dennis hopper once again plays himself), and started listening to COIL. i'm a big fan of psychic tv, drugs, acid house and 80's industrial, so it's exciting to start listening to something new to me that's really important in those worlds.
in particular it was a perfect mindset to start listening to "love's secret domain". very weird and fun record. "disco hospital" is this kaleidoscope that gets you listening closely, and then there are a number of very distinct songs, the funny overheard conversation of "things happen," the dancey "snow", the specifically acid-referencing single "windowpane" are all quite catchy and outgoing while at the same time having a forbidding, goth-y density that invites repeat listens and repels the casual listener.
it feels like music made by a kindred spirit, which i guess is what one is looking for with any art, and that's why the arts are the best thing to get into.
i like that the cover art is drawn on an outhouse door - that's the secret domain.
anyway, i'm deep into thinking about COIL when suddenly, it hit me - i should go to 99 ranch in the san gabriel valley. it's 15 minutes driving without traffic. the weather had gone from 90's to a breezy 70's. i hit the road with some rice wine in my belly and blaring the new record i've gotten into. found 2 bottles for $3, easy. successful day!
