good conversation

an youn ha sae yo,

just got done conversing with my professor about perhaps being a research assistant.... and boy did it go well. he seemed just as excited as i was, and i couldn't ask for anything more.

he said he will have his stuff set up at about the winter, which i believe is perfect. gives me enough time in my current job to make some money but also not too much that i lose interest in the current work in the process of dreaming of the future!

he was also great to just talk to, he had advice for me concerning my future as an electrical engineer but he also listened intently, and was not concerned with keeping composure. i would, for example make a small off-handed joke and he'd really squint his face with a smile.... or real jokes were met with a real deep laughter. one like i would only ever read about, never heard before. i really appreciated his honesty as well. he was open to the fact that this is his first time being a professor in the usa, and therefore he's not entirely sure on the exact culture here. i, of course, couldn't provide that much insight either, but the little bit i passed along seemed to make him content.

at one point he pulled up a folder from his new faculty orientation that had a couple programs for student success. he asked if i had heard of these and if perhaps this is the way he should go along with it... unfortunately, i didn't really know. no matter, he said by the time it's time to get working, he will figure something out.

at another point, he recommended seoul as a cool place to live. i commented i would have to get my korean back up to par, to which he replied that no no, the people there are more than willing to practice their english on me haha. i informed him that greeks are the same way in that regard, then. i might keep it in mind then, i said. pleased, he let me know what if i would like some day to go there, he can certainly make some connections for me. cool guy

at the end of our... chat, as he put it, as i got up to leave, i thanked him for the umpteenth time for the opportunity... and decided to ask how to say thank you in korean....

awesome! i have an electrical engineer in my family, it's an amazing career path and i hope you can find happiness in your new job. :)

do you ever miss some of the customs professors have in greek schools?
for instance one thing i would really miss should i ever study outside of my country is being able to call professors by "mx (first name)". i...... don't think i'll ever get used to calling people surnames :P

happy to hear from you,

greeks are the same, we say mx first name for the most part. professors are also called by mr/ms instead of "professor" or "doctor" (unless they're weird), though for the most part you do stick with surname in that situation, lest you know the prof well.

i also of course miss the collective laziness/chillness. a greek man is not made for so much work.

What were the programs for student success you mentioned?

fuck if i remember

it was just a couple things (one of them being undergrad research) that just mean to give you some experience in what's to come post-college.
