So, the trailer for the Chicken Run sequel dropped a little while ago- and honestly, I'm a little worried.
Chicken Run is a stop-motion animated film by Aardman, and it's a film about a group of Chickens trying to escape a farm. It's one of my personal favourites and I know a fair few people really wanted a sequel, so imagine what people must be feeling when this dropped -
I, for one, was absolutely ecstatic. There'd not been an Aardman release in ages, and the rumours about a potential Chicken Run 2 were all over the place. Having said that... I'm a little bit disappointed, and rather worried too.
First Thoughts
OK, so first off - it's brilliant to be getting a sequel, especially after such a long time. The trailer also doesn't give too much of the plot away, but it's got that usual Netflix sin of revealing the plot twist straight away! Way to spoil the hype...
This isn't the first time Netflix has given a twist away in a trailer, but it's still a little irritating to see they're not even hiding their "look, nostalgia" business model.
The issues with Exclusivity
Yes, yet another netflix exclusive. No dvd release, no cinema release, just more subscription fees. I was so very excited for this movie, but finding out I'd have to shell out for a netflix subscription just completely killed my hype for it. I've never liked streaming services. Sure they're useful for some situations, but what happens if they just... remove all your "owned" movies? Physical media is the way to go, and I would have thought that Aardman of all people, who make animations using physical plasticine figures, would understand that.
Conclusion
Overall, my opinion on this movie went from hopeful to bleak. I don't think this movie will have as much of a draw as the first one did, purely because of the unfortunate streaming only release. If there's something I'd want gone soon, it's streaming only releases and trailers that give away the plot twist straight away.

Because netflix's losing costumers so they're trying to gain them back with nostalgia. The movie might be great, but honestly, I don't think it will be as good as the 1st one bcs there was no need for a sequel. Even if it ends up being nice, it will still feel unnecessary (at least for me lol)

Totally agree. I'm also not a big fan of the fact that some of the original cast are not returning (except Mel Gibson, screw that guy) which makes me wonder if there might have been pay disputes or similar "animation isn't real film" related silliness from the higher-ups at netflix

Yeah I wouldn't be surprised if that's what happened
