This week's cicada of the week is Neotibicen carnicularis, also known as the dog-day cicada, dog-day harvestfly, or heatbug! They are a species of annual cicada and are found in parts of Canada and the Central and Eastern United States. Their songs sound like loud, high-pitched whines and last for several seconds until it fades out at the end. Some other species of cicada are also called the dog-day cicada, including Tibicen pruinosa and Tibicen chloromera. Canicularis is thought to hybridize with linnei and pruinosis due to morphological and song variations. Dog-day cicadas have an average life cycle of 3 years, but it may vary and is subject to climate extremes.
Explanation for names
DOG-DAY: a reference to the hot "dog days" of late summer when this species is heard singing; at this time in the northern hemisphere the Dog Star (Sirius) is above the horizon in the Big Dog constellation (Canis Major).
CANICULARIS: from the Latin "canicula" (a little dog, the Dog Star, Sirius)
