You might think this is a random weird name
But it's not
(LONG rant ahead because my biology class made me reflect way too much)
Shortly said, the CRISPR-Cas9 is an enzyme that can cut the failures in the DNA to (hypothetically) cure some illnesses like leukemia and overall many blood related problems, which I think it's amazing because you know, that kind of illnesses are really difficult to treat. It still isn't known wether it is or isn't safe to use on humans and animals (because we can use it in plants! In Germany it's legal, for example), but it's under investigations.
My problem with the Cas9 is... artificial babies
Yes, you read it right, ARTIFICIAL BABIES
Can you imagine it? Creating you own child using specific DNA codes without having to go through pregnancy, designing everything from its looks to every single organ on its body, as well as its gender. But that's completely stupid! First, it's really unethical to create an artificial human, how can one even think of it? It would just come down to people creating them for questionable reasons
And second, just imagine you can actually create a baby to your liking. And given how many humans are really superficial, they will just start coding what they want their child to look like. Just get into the situation: "oh my kid has to have big blue eyes, blonde hair, must be tall and have a small waist, it will look like a model!". And then you go outside and see not one, nor two, but A HUNDRED of different babies that look exactly the same, like fashionable babies. Or a hundred different Bella Hadid clones walking down the street together, and that kind of stuff.
Then people will be able to tell when you created your baby, because guess what. They will ALL follow the trends at the time they were created. And once they aren't in anymore, or they are considered ugly? Who knows what will happen to them.
Not even siblings would look the same anymore, you could have a blonde tall boy and then the next one would be short with dark hair. And the third might even have pink hair, who knows? Having these babies would just become a trend after some time, in which people would just keep on creating them to stay in and maybe even neglecting the others...
So, are CRISPR babies the future? ABSOLUTELY NOT
For some people, like parents who can't have babies for different reasons, like infertility or the consume of some certain medicaments that make it difficult to have babies; even for those who have genetic diseases and are scared to have children and make them suffer because of the disease they would make them inherit, CRISPR babies would be a blessing, it would give them a solution to those problems.
But we can't act like those with loads of money wouldn't spend lots of money just to have their own fashionable baby (it feel so wrong to write this too), just like they have already spent on high-technology advances created for those who need them, like biomechanical limbs.
Furthermore, what if a debate starts regarding if they are or aren't human? Some people would go as far as to enslave their babies...
To conclude my long rant, CRISPR-Cas9 technology is amazing because of its ability to help people with bad diseases they can't cure. But its use should go only for medical purposes, not for some stupid things like trends and mode, to create people, which is, for me, completely unethical (or maybe if it's just my opinion, it's more like unmoral and not unethical).
