Ayup, back to multitools.
I was hopping to get some tech posts in before that, but this is tangentially related, I promise.
Anyway, I'd like to first say, ideal doesn't mean all encompassing, at least not in this case, for reasons that are likely to become quite obvious.
Another thing being - this one is supposed to be all geniuine victorinox. Despite my and others' belief that a precission blade is an ideal addition, I want genuinity flt this one, plus same reasons as not encompassing everythin everywhere all at once will also apply.
With all that said Let's start from the base:
The Cybertool M
It's what I'd describe as a good start for me, being a nerd. It's standout feature being the 4mm bit driver, also equiped with scissors, pliers and standard SAK implements, with everything I could want from it on the bottom, minus the screwdriver, for redundancy reasons. But it does have some problems. Easiest to fix is the parcel hook - the one on the Cpompact has a nail file, this one does not. If I'm being entirely hoinest I don't file my nails, but I can think of a few other uses for it, especially around electronics. Worse is the thickness. IT's actually as wide as it's tall, wich to be as confusing as possible makes it about as close to being 3cm as it is to being 1 inch in width. As much as I would like to include the big file, with metal saw on the edge, it'd only add to that, especially since it's thicker than a normal knife. I mean the size is by no means in a nightmare territory, but I wouldn't want to push it and prefferably I'd want it slimmer. This is where one needs to omit things, adding more would make it wider than it is tall and I just don't like the idea. We could make it slimmer tho, for instance by removing the bottle and can oppeners and maybe including the combo replacement, since the Compact already got involved, but I wouldn't do that for one big reason (and one smaller one) - I need room for an extra.
A couple of weeks back I posted this meme to Victorinox' oficial subreddit
and that blade is what I'd like to see included most. So appearing in it's usual spot, replacing the can oppener would be the main standout feature of this fellow:
The lesser reason being that allegedly you can use the bottle oppener as a square shank wrench, and I ain't sure that the combo tool can do the same.
But all that's still to normal for MY ideal. No, the redundancy of knives. No, my main blade needs to make a statement. Thankfully I have already found my answer years ago, and it's called "Budding Knife."
I already have one of those, and I love the shape. Also love how good it is at scraping. The only thing I trust can detach a phone battery from it's glue without damaging it, wich I actually done recently. No damage. I think that alone justifies it's inclusion. One small (big) issue. The tool is full 9mm longer than our base and the knife takes up most of that. If it fits and I have to throw out the secondary - I'd do it, but it WOULD mean not having an in-line point on any of the blades, and success is not guaranteed either way. The alternative exists however.
With all the style, but none of the size or battery removal potential, we have the budding combo knife:
the tool here is only 3mm longer, and the blade itself is shorter relative to it. it also has an in-line point, but it's edge is also seemingly shorter than it could be, and again - the main advantage of the OG for tech purposes is straight up gone.
I also have some les prominent ideas for changes. Like potentially replacing the typical scissors with ones from the Evolution series, like this one:
They are smaller but allegedly self sharpening thanks to their shape, wich would be incredibly nice for cutting small wires. I know for a fact such a mod would require some adjustments to the tool tho, and I'm not sure about the results, but one more potential side effect is the extra room could maybe help me re-arrange the tools.
If I was left with a combo budding knife and it was thin enough to fit something next, particualarly the electrician's blade, and if the scissors prooved accomodating enough to fit the bottle opener opposing to them, only thenwould I attempt cutting down on the size.
BUT I'M NOT DONE YET. The finnishing touch. The scales. And the ones I'd like to put on the knife are something special. The AVT scales.
My ideal Swiss Army Knife
