HISTORY
in the early to mid 1800s people started to take interest in the brain. however, due to the fact that we cannot see brain waves on a dead brain and they had no way of seeing the brain waves of a living person they had many MANY incorrect theories.
the two main theories; whole brainers and localizers (sorry to every secret share box i have sent this question to)
whole brainers believed the brain was, well, whole. they compared the brain to a jelly or cloud where thought could appear from anywhere.
localizers believed that the brain was divided into 37 ‘organs’ each with their own function. such as the organ of respect and the organ or kindness were thought to sit right above your left eyebrow. they believed that if an organ was damaged then it would no longer affect the person’s personality. they also believed they could tell what kind of person you were off the bumps and dips in your skull.
LOBES AND FUNCTIONS
the brain consists of 4 lobes and your cerebellum.
frontal lobe - the frontal lobe is located at the front of your skull. (duh) and is mainly in charge of your personality, reasoning, and value understanding (along with a lot of other things)
parietal lobe - the parietal lobe takes up the middle and little of the back of your skull. its main job is to translate your senses into manageable code for the rest of your brain to use. people with Synesthesia have synesthesia because the parietal lobe mixes up the translations for their senses.
temporal lobe - this love is located right above your ear. and youre never gonna guess what it does. THATS RIGHT IT WORKS WITH YOUR HEARING!! it also is home to the hypocampus. which as you know helps with your memory
occipital lobe - the occipital lobe is located at the very back of your skull. the occipital lobe works with your eyes to allow you to see. and fun fact you have two and the left one corresponds to your right eye and vise verse.
cerebellum - lastly the cerebellum, you also have two of these. they are located under the skin on your neck and are actually one of the only two parts of the brain not under the skull (the other being the brain stem). the cerebellum mainly help you keep balance
PHINEAS GAGE
this will be very brief bc i could go on and on about this dude
phineas gage was a railroad worker in 1848 when he was victim to a terrible accident. phineas had an iron tamping rod shot there his skull. (under the left cheek bone and out the middle of his hairline) miraculously, phineas lived for another 11 and a half years after his accident. reports say that phineas was up and talking about what had happened to the doctor within 30 minutes. phineas had severally damaged his frontal lobe thus changes his personality. phineas went from a kind, loyal, and a team player to a vulgar, rude, disrespectful man. in the mid 1800s the whole brainer VS localizer debate was thriving. phineas himself actually went to a meeting between the two groups as they both claimed him as proof for their theory. later in life phineas began to suffer of seizures, which ultimately led to his death in 1860.
