So I recently watched a deftones documentary for the first time and woah… I prob should’ve done it sooner. I learned a whole bunch of new stuff that I didn’t know about all of the band members and I like them even more than before1!!!1
I really like how it was mainly about their struggles with touring and stuff. It made me kinda sad when Chino started talking about how the hardest part of touring was being away from his family slash his wife and children. It really made me think how sucky it must be to be famous like him and be gone from your family like half of the time. The documentary also had Chinos ex wife in there because it was filmed at the time they were married. It kinda gave insight into their relationship and I understand why they’re divorced now lol. I loved how it talked about how the band got together as I don’t hear about it too too much. Also the way they described and showed their writing and making process for music was hilarious. Just yelling at each other till they get it right seems pretty deftones to me.
Another big big part of the film that I liked was mainly the parts where chino was talking because he made a lot of good points. One of them being how fans were mad that he didn’t scream as much in his music anymore. To respond to that, he said that if he doesn’t have a purpose to scream in the song, then he won’t. Which makes like complete sense and I really like that he said that.
Something that I didn’t expect going into it was the end of the documentary. When it was time for the band to go on the Conan O’Brien show and perform their song “Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away)”. This is the part where Chino became extremely antsy and anxious. He kept on talking about how he “fucked up his throat” and how he wanted to cancel it very badly but couldn’t now. I’m assuming this is when he damaged his vocal cords which explains a lot. A lot of people always talked about how Chino didn’t sound the best in that specific live performance and how his voice sounded off. It turns out, it’s cuz he screwed up his vocal cords. I personally think he still sounded amazing especially since he had like JUST damaged his vocal cords right before it. Def could’ve been worse.
All in all I absolutely loved loved loveeeddd this film and will def be watching more deftones docs when I find the time to. 🫶
