music is something that brings people together more than anything i've ever seen, it builds community. i believe you can also tell a lot about a person by their music taste, from my personal experience, you will never have a more passionate conversation with a stranger than hearing a music lover talk about their favorites. though they may not have the same taste as you, i've found you can learn from that and even find new stuff that you never would've even considered listening to before. you can hear new and different perspectives on what makes someone like or dislike something in music, i think music is a great representation of diversity amongst us as humans.
in short, if you want to start an interesting conversation with someone new, ask about music.
