as i once mentioned in my blog oscar wilde's life in russian literary criticism, russian literary society always wanted to hide wilde's personal life, they use a lot of phrases and metaphors when they describe the trial so no one understands why was he was arrested. even if they mention, which happens oh so rarely, the reason, they make it look like he was 'corrupted'. i expected the same from this book, but livergant is the one who laughs at these homophobic attempts of 'saving wilde's image from being corrupted and associated with homosexuality'. he even listed other talented homosexual writers and poets and commented "you [homophobic article writers, people who study wilde's works] think, that if someone is gay, they write worse or what?". i was really surprised to see this point of view here! in addition, livergant described oscar and bosie's relationships, the trial very in detail.
also, ive never seen such detailed description of wilde's life in school, college, his family. it was very pleasing to read it :)
great book 10/10 turned out that livergant is the main redactor of my favourite literary magazine woah
finished book: oscar wilde's biography by alexander livergant

hi athos!!! i doubt that there are even any english translations, because livergant is translator himself and he probably used a lot of english biography books, so he knows that there are many of these :(! in addition, i made a quick attempt to find it, but in vain!

that’s amazing ! i love that he didn’t try to hide these things that’re so important to understanding wilde and his life and art

yes yes, me too! i absolutely agree with you
ive read several russian articles about wilde's philosophy about the youth, and it was so.. odd! they quote his phrase from the trial, when he said that he'd rather spend some time with a young man, rather than being questioned at the court and the way they commented this quote is so.. funny "according to the point of the trial, this wilde's quote is typical to his worldview" or sth like omg just say that he liked boys and the conversation is over
