m’s misadventures

hello! i’m on stage crew for my school’s musical and play productions, and later today is our third show night. we’re doing high school musical right now, and it’s going amazing! well… mostly.

our opening night went VERY smoothly, better than i expected. last night, though, was a little interesting. i thought that being slow to react to a couple cues would be the worst thing that would happen, but i was a little wrong. we had a few mess-ups, but honestly, they were funny enough that they were worth it.

one that sticks out in my memory the most (because it was me who did it) was during we’re all in this together. of course, a lot of people in the crew were dancing in the wings, because its very difficult NOT to dance to that song, right? and then… apparently i didn’t notice a little thing that happened, which was that part of the area i was in wasn’t 100% obscured from the audience.

normally it wouldn’t matter if the audience sees somebody in the wings, because that just happens, yknow? except for the fact that the spotlight flashed over that spot in the wings, and i was in the middle of dancing absolutely TERRIBLY. it took me a couple seconds to realize and oh man, once i realized that, the urge to flee into the forest and never return was very strong.

still, i think it was pretty funny! despite the fact that the director saw me. and he’s already scary enough. but its fine! in fact, its great! i learned from this experience.

see, i haven’t actually been involved with a show that’s had anyone sitting in the front few rows yet, ‘cause of a certain pandemic that was going on. our show last spring had limited audience, and our show last fall was in an outside amphitheater that had doors on the wings that could close. now i know for any future shows that i should only dance when i’m closer to the back of the stage.

that’s a tip for anyone else reading this who is new to stage crew or planning to get involved in stage crew. you’ve always gotta be aware of your surroundings unless you want to embarrass yourself in front of the ~20ish (or more) people in the front row who miiight be able to see you.

that’s the first of m’s misadventures! there’s bound to be more mishaps and funny little accidents in the future for me to share, so i’ll be back!
