[Deathconsciousness -Have a Nice Life] Review 2023/8/18/ TW: Suicide mention

Hey everyone

this is going to be my first review on here :)

Deathconsciousness (released on January 1st, 2008) is the debut album of the band Have a Nice Life, formed in 2000 with members Dan Barrett and Tim Macuga. This album is highly praised online and for good reason, this albums sound is quite different from any other record with hint of shoegaze, goth rock, industrial, post-punk, and ambient. From the start of the record you're immediately put in this dark sort of empty place, and the title itself "A Quick One" can have context of either being sexual or alcoholic, aswell as the Clahammer Banjo and synth that plays throughout the track which really sets the mood for the rest of the record. The next track after "Bloodhail" continues with the dark and gothic sounds, but aswell as in the lyrics with the lyrics being about humans indifference as the album booklet references. The Big Gloom is a song contemplating death about how and if the narrators suicide/death will affect any person close to him while also hoping someone can at least relate or help him. Telephony with its reverbed drums and guitar, shows the narrator build a telephone time machine to contact a deceased loved one in the past. Waiting for Black Metal Records to Come in the Mail is to me about the suffering in existence and how no matter how hard we try nothing is ever good enough and the suffering continues. Holy Fucking Shit 40,000 in its lyrics seem to compare humans and robots; how they act doing the same thing day by day not only that but is most likely referencing "anhedonia" where a person loses interest in things that used to give them joy. I Don't Love is the most straightforward and arguably most depressing with the song all about wanting death, as the narrator says he doesn't feel anything. The final track Earthmover is about immortal Earth-destroying golems that destroy everything on Earth after which they have no purpose not being able to create and in the end wish that they were all dead.

i have very few hiccups with this album, there are moments where i feel it runs a bit long i still found enjoyment in most, if not every track.

i would recommend

10/10
