universigh updates #2 - my favourite songs

universigh updates #2

hi there, octavia here. today i thought id make a list of all my favourite songs. i tried limiting it to one song per artist because i thought it would be fairer than having almost every song be exclusively by interpol, the strokes and radiohead. this list is also going to be non chronological because most of them switch places fairly often in my ranking (though i will mention which one my favourite is when i talk about it). so yeah, with all that being said, lets get into it.

all my friends - lcd soundsystem

starting off with a banger, i love the progression this song takes. it starts out with a very simple piano riff and over the course of 7 minutes builds it in an mesmerizing way. the lyrics are great, they give off a very "im getting old but i still wanna have a good time" vibe that i think really works in the tracks favour, especially the outro, with james murphy howling "if i could see all my friends tonight" wrapping up this track in an unforgettable way.

tame impala - alter ego

this song has some of my favourite production ive ever heard on a song (the original version not the 10th anniversary remaster), the way all the guitars, synths and bass blend together in a psychedelic whirlpool that makes it sound like the music is washing over you. i really relate to the lyrics about feeling confused and having self doubt in social situations, themes which tame impala would explore on other track like why wont they talk to me, though i think theyre tackled here in a better way.

the killers - sams town

this is my victory song. every time i play it, i feel an intense amount of payoff to whatever came before it (ironic considering its the opener for the album of the same name). brandon flowers vocals are fantastic as always, i love the way the synths and the guitars seem to switch between leading the song and the bass, while not as astonising or as intricate as some of the bands other tracks, fits the instrumentals perfectly.

paramore - told you so

im pretty sick of the 80s comeback thats been happening since the late 2000s but im completely fine with it existing if it means paramore will make more music like this. this is easily my favourite track of theirs (also hayley williams favourite, funnily enough). the guitar sounds stellar, the drumming gets pretty intricate at parts, especially on the chorus, and hayley's vocals ties the track together. i also love the music video for the track. if a video could be used to describe my gender, this music video would be half of it, the other half being this video right here.

the strokes - the adults are talking

the most recent song on this list is the one from my all time favourite band. the opening track from the new abnormal is the strokes song i never knew i wanted until i heard it. the back and forth the guitars have before the second verse makes the title seem way more clever than i expected it to be, i never get sick of the simple drum loop the songs built off and julians vocals are in my opinion, the best they've ever been, especially during the songs climax. the song came out at a weird time (tna released about 2 weeks into the pandemic) so it essentially soundtracked 2020 for me and i became extremely attatched to it during some of my lowest points last year. even if im biased a bit, its easily the best track from the new abnormal and, in my opinion, the best track theyve ever made (tho hard to explain comes extremely close for me).

beach house - myth

beach house are the type of band to make you ascend in 5 minutes or less and boy do they do it on myth. the soundscape of this song is phenomenal and fits perfectly with the melancholic mood of pretty much every beach house track. even though a lot of beach house songs tend to be very consistent with the sounds and mood the go for, i feel like they hit their peak with myth.

100 gecs - money machine

i dont even have a defence for this song or anything i just love it. im a trans girl on the internet, listening to 100 gecs just comes with the title. the overblown bass, the distorted beat, the fact that the first lyric of the song is "hey you little piss baby", its a sight to behold and the fact its barely 2 minutes long is fucking wild to me.

arcade fire - the suburbs

going back into sensible choices for favourite songs, the suburbs is a top tier song for me. the track feels like going from a cool summer breeze to a cold desolate wasteland, all while the lyrics describe people growing apart as they get older. coming from someone whos had a lot of relationships fail and deteriorate, the lyrics of this song get through to me in ways most songs cant. i dont think i can count the amount of times ive been on the verge of tears while listening to this song, singing "were still screaming" trying to stop a mental breakdown before it happens. its hard to explain how this song makes me feel but its definitely a song that i cant imagine myself living without.

queens of the stone age - make it wit chu

make it wit chu is the ultimate sex jam. if people say its something else, theyre probably lying. the way the piano and guitar sync up, josh hommes vocals are smooth and the solo near the end of the track is so damn slick its extraordinary.

radiohead - all i need

i know this is probably a bit of an unconventional pick for a favourite radiohead song but i dont care, all i need is an outstanding track. the bassline is great, the pianos sound beautiful and the orchestra that comes in at the latter end of the track are fantastic. its the only radiohead song i need.

interpol - the heinrich maneuver

i dont even know how to explain why this song is so good to me, every part of the song just clicks perfectly in my head. the drumming is top tier, the guitars are intricate and melodic, the lyrics are amazing and that damn bassline is probably my favourite bassline ever (maybe beaten by untitled which is also by interpol, but its a very close call between those 2). i also wanna mention the music video, a slow motion one shot that perfectly matches the song in my mind (even though theyre completely different lol). this is my favourite song ever and i doubt itll change anytime soon.

so yeah, thats a list of my favourite songs. if you have any songs you love, tell me in the comments, id love to see them. with all that being said, ill see you guys later uwu
