on the false dichotomy present in online circles surrounding fiction and its relation to reality.

(this topic kind of teeters the line between writing discussion and philosophy, but just in case i'm gonna categorize it as philosophy lol)

as this is a blogging site, i feel like i can actually speak about this without it being compressed into reactionary nothing-statements. that being said...

fiction and reality, while separate, are very much intertwined!

by that i don't mean some odd, pseudo-spiritual "reality merge"-type gobbledygook. i mean it as fiction is one of many methods humans, you and me, communicate with one another. we express ourselves through fiction and media, both in what we create and what we consume! that expression, that implicit conversation between artist and audience, is real. we, for the most part, look at an artist work as an extension of them; just as we, for the most part, create art as an extension of the self.

as such, i feel it somewhat important to be considerate to others when publishing works. of course, that doesn't mean satisfying bigots through censorship or completely scrubbing any "problematic" content from your work. on the contrary, you should always push back against bigotry, and discussion of complex and "problematic" topics needs to be had!

it does mean that you probably shouldn't create or consume uncritically bigoted or otherwise disgusting content, and then brush off people's understandable discontent toward you doing so as "puritanical outrage." a moderate presence of inhibition with what you create/consume is important in many regards, especially when it comes to mental health.

...basically, don't be a free speech absolutist; be it in fandom/art spaces or in politics. respect others' boundaries as humans, and try to be amicable when you can; i swear it leads to preferable social outcomes.

P.S: i understand this conversation is even more complex that what i've written here. however, i do still believe the sentiments i express are applicable regardless.
