TRAPPIST-1b and c, and the possibility of life elsewhere in the system.

a few months ago or so, researchers observing the TRAPPIST-1 system using the James Webb Space Telescope (cursory resources on what those are here and here) published a paper that discusses the observed improbability of there being a substantial atmosphere on both TRAPPIST-1b and TRAPPIST-1c.

i'm not a NASA researcher, by any means, but i do have some background knowledge on the system and the potential concerns toward its otherwise remarkable suitability for life- the main concern being atmospheric stability.

that being said, i wonder if these observations realize said concerns; that a suitable atmosphere for life can't exist past f. that means that both TRAPPIST-1d and TRAPPIST-1e, two of the most promising and Earth-like exoplanets to date, are more or less completely uninhabitable. furthermore, it's concerning as if that's the case, that would imply atmospheres such as ours are extremely rare, as they wouldn't be able to exist normally around the habitable zones of M-dwarf stars (the observably and theoretically most common type of star in the universe.

tl;dr: new stuff came out about the TRAPPIST-1 star system, and it doesn't appear great. RIP my jokes about leaving to TRAPPIST-1e to escape capitalism, i guess

kind of! it's like getting 4 items in a secret room, curse of the blind, with glitched crown. promising, but the two we picked up initially were black lotus and necronomicon.
